Upskirts Biography

NEW SINGLE: http://goo.gl/n5ryL5 UPSKIRTS are four dudes from Sydney. With influences ranging from psych and shoegaze to surf and grunge, they have an eclectic sound, but never does their music sound like just one of these things. Since forming out of (drummer/singer) Tom Kell’s sunroom back in 2009 they have released two EPs. First was the scrappy, thumping Vacations (2010), recorded with whatever time and money the band could scrape together while they were finishing off their HSC and playing their first shows around Sydney. In the summer of 2011 the band retreated to Studios 301 Byron Bay with producer Jordan Power where the band spent a week eating plums, exploring spacious sounds, dynamic rhythms and more complexity in their songwriting. What came out were 5 tracks – ultimately called Disconnection (2012) – of twangy surf riffs, garage rock and fringes of psychadelia. Since then UPSKIRTS have performed relentlessly, sharpening their wild and expansive live show touring up and down the east coast and playing every venue possible throughout Sydney. In 2013 the boys sent a week in Britain playing in London and at The Great Escape Festival before getting to work putting together another EP. Heading down to Melbourne to work with the legendary Paul ‘Woody’ Annison (Children Collide, Hunting Grounds, Dune Rats), they began exploring more spacious textures. What came out was ‘We Could Be a Team’ – an extension of the bands’ previous foray into psychedelic rock with its blistering guitars and ethereal vocals. The path of sonic experimentation continued throughout 2014 with ‘Mind’s a Burden’ and ‘Where’ - two more singles that saw the band stretching their creative limbs and forming the foundations of what is to be their third EP under the careful eye of producer Tim Carr (Ernest Ellis, Matt Corby, Urthboy). 2014 saw UPSKIRTS scoring FBi Radio’s ‘Unsigned Artist of The Week’, plus supports with the likes of The Drums, The Delta Diggs and Deep Sea Arcade and slots at The Blurst of Times, Young Henry’s Small World Festival while spending more time at Studios 301 in Sydney with Carr. For 2015, the UPSKIRTS boys have a brand new EP under their belt. It’s 7 tracks of fuzz guitars, spacious vocals, swirling riffs and pop melodies. 'Barely Moving' is out now via Inertia Access.
