Birmingham's melodic metalheads Opheon are flying high on the back of the release of their debut EP. 'As I Walk With Fire' is the culmination of years of songwriting and gigging experience generated by 4 lads from the Midlands. With an average age of just 20, Opheon perform with a maturity beyond their years and, with praise from Robb Flynn of Machine Head and Corey Beaulieu of Trivium, have some serious ambition. This 6-track EP really explores the range of modern metalcore: lead single ‘The Distance’ is the anthemic yet crushing side that pushes through to ‘Lost In The Undertow’, a fiery slab of melodic groove. What makes Opheon stand out is their broad range of influences. From Gojira and Pantera to While She Sleeps and Trivium, by seeking inspiration across the full spectrum of metal, they’re not following trends or one specific set of compositional rules: this makes for interesting listening.
