In an open call for entry, the Brower Center asked Bay Area artists to offer a 21st century perspective on this complex and incredibly significant concept. The result is Security Question, a juried exhibition that embraces an expansive definition, exploring contemporary military and police issues while widening the debate to include environmental, social, and economic concerns. At times dark, humorous, and hopeful, the featured artworks investigate our national and local defense systems and explore whether security might also be found in our connections to each other and the natural world.

Heartache Sisters Biography

Adventurous Americana duet, Heartache Sisters, initially began in the Fall of 2013 as a streamlined street team to spread the gospel of their 5-piece classic country band, Laura Benitez & the Heartache, and perform the group’s music in a stripped down manner. Soon the Berkeley/Oakland, California duo began mixing in Laura Benitez’s (ex-The Cottonpickers) new songs (that touch on folk music and include a stunning murder ballad) and Michele Kappel-Stone’s (ex-Kirby Grips/Tippy Canoe) fiery power pop, jazz, and 60s girl group influenced originals. They unite the variety of roots and rock rhythms with their searing close harmony singing and emotional live performances. Their sets takes you on a ride, with the two switching between Acoustic Guitar, Drums, Ukulele, Mandolin, and Electric Guitar, swapping songwriting and moving from high energy rave-ups to quiet, haunting vocal driven melodies and back. This former side project has grown into its own sharp entity that is currently touring the West and East Coasts of the U.S. while working on their debut full length. In early 2014 Maurice Tani (77 El Deora/Roy Loney & the Phantom Movers/Zasu Pitts Memorial Orch.) produced, recorded and added his inimitable playing style to their debut singles. *Digital Singles available from Bandcamp, iTunes, Amazon Mp3 and all major platforms for instant gratification *Two song CD available from Bandcamp, HeartacheSisters.com and live shows for those who prefer a recording in hand. *Debut Full Length in 2016 Close Harmony Americana meets Power Pop Duet http://HeartacheSisters.com
