Tape Mastah Steph Biography

Of French origin, born in 1973, Stéphane Gaulon aka "Tape Mastah Steph " (TMS) , spent his early childhood years in Bordeaux, where his musician father and a record collector taught young Steph early on to play drums and guitar, not to mention learning the importance of different musical styles .. ( Classical, 70s Funk, Disco, Rare Grooves, Rock & Roll, Jazz and Reggae ). In 1981, TMS moved to San Jose, California. Exposed to the arts and culture Hip Hop, he decided to follow in the footsteps of his father and would spend most of his time learning how to mix and create paused mixed beats with a double cassette player and the Technic 1200s. Impressed by his abilities and originality to create and mix, the local environment Hip Hop would crown him with the name "Tape Mastah Steph". His professional career as a DJ and producer would begin in 1988. Fast forward to 1991, TMS made the acquaintance of his neighbor Chris Manak better known as "Peanut Butter Wolf" the founder of label Stones Throw Records. PBW played a valuable part in teaching Young Steph techniques on how to create beats via the Ensoniq EPS. In 93 Steph purchased one of his own. Subsequently, TMS will produce for various artists such as Dave Dub, Year of The Ox, Zest The Smoker, Megabusive, Matt Gamin, Third Sight (D-Styles & Roughneck Jihad) and eventually produced tracks for Freestyle Fellowship's very own Myka Nyne, to name a few. TMS moved to Dallas, Texas in the summer of 2014 and quickly established himself in the middle of the local Hip Hop scene. In 2012, parallel with the production of his album with Dave Dub's "The Treatment" released through Stones Throw Records, TMS continued to appear regularly in Part as opening DJ act and host in support of groups such as Mobb Deep, The Beatnuts, Freestyle Fellowship, D-Styles (Beat Junkies) Egyptian Lover, Kool Keith, Hieroglyphics, Planet Asia, DJ Ruthless Ramsey, and Gel Roc to name a few. That same year he was nominated as one of the Top 5 best DJs in the Dallas Observer Music Awards.
