Sahra da Silva & The Jagged Soul Biography

'OH, LOVE!' is the name of the newly released album about the rollercoaster-trip it can be daring to love, live and let go. With an everlasting love for old school soul, storytelling folk, groovy funk, melancholic blues and the 60s hippie rock Sahra da Silva & the Jagged Soul has a wide sound, embracing it all. SAHRA DA SILVA BIOGRAPHY Sahra da Silva (Copenhagen, Denmark)
Danish soul/blues singer, songwriter. Her father is Portuguese and her Mother Danish. She grew up in a small town, 20 km north of Copenhagen, with her mother and little brother. She's a reputable fighter for the soul and blues music in the Copenhagen live music environment, and artistically best known for her retro soul band, Sahra da Silva & the Jagged Soul, and her cooperation with blues/world guitarist, Alain Apaloo (Api Pipo). As a child: Music has always been a great deal in Sahra's life and family, but It was the school teacher that saw the unpolished an blooming talent in Sahra and ordered her mother to sign her up at the local music school choir. Already at the age of 8 Sahra was chosen to sing solo at a school play, for the first time. As long as she remember she had dreamed of being a singer. She started playing around with writing her own songs in english at the age of 13 and at the age of 15 she performed her first real pop song, titled ’I Don't Know What You Want With Me’, at a local Danish TV-channel (TvDanmark2) in 2000. There was quite a stir around the young singer at the time, but she decided to take time to grow up and figure out the business herself, and not blindly trusting people in a environment she didn't know the least about. - and a teenager: The year after (2001/2002), she got the chance to finish her primary school at a music and theater continuation school in Jutland. Inspired by Fiona Apple, she started teaching herself to play the piano, writing more songs trying to accompany her singing. She later on developed a friendship and collaboration with another student - a beatmaker and rapper, for whom she started out singing and writing top lines, drawn to the soul and R&B-universe. Sahra kept on working with programmed R&B and took several courses in music production. In 2004 she met Michael Pærremand, a Danish underground R&B/hiphop producer (for, amongst others, the Danish rapper, Niklas) with whom she wrote and recorded a lot of songs over approximately 4 years. - several of them are still on her repertoire, though strongly re-arranged. Gettin that Mojo working: In late 2006, eager for playing with live musicians, Sahra met Heidi Lindahl (Singer-songwriter/painter/photographer - most of Sahra's pictures) whom introduced her to the Thursday Night Blues Jam at Mojo Blues Bar. It was love at first sight. Sahra fell in love immediately and didn't miss a single thursday on Mojo the next couple of years. She got a bar tending job at the place within a month, and shortly after she started working as a DJ, and also blues/jazz/world guitarist Alain Apaloo helped her create 'Sahra da Silva Band' and re-arranged several of her songs, suitable for organic live performance. Within no time she was a name on everybody's lips at the little blues club, and the word spread around town in the music environment as she started entering the other stages in Copenhagen. Sahra da Silva & the Jagged Soul: Through out the years, the members were slowly changed one by one and in 2009 Sahra named the band; 'Sahra da Silva & the Jagged Soul'. The constellation was fulfilled in 2010 with Flemming Danielsen og guitar, Lasse Storgaard on organ and keys, Steven Ardilsø on bass and Jens Stoklund Jensen on drums. Shortly after they participated in DK's Got Talent on DR1 (DKs public service channel #1) with their original songs; Soulmate (acoustic - audition), Only Mine (1. live show) and the very first version of Leaving You Behind (semifinals) in 2010 and with a big hype from the danish media. Vocal breakdown: In february 2011 the band started the recordings of their debut EP, but as Sahra increased her amount of gigs and at the same time was getting more and more tense and overburdened in her trought, her voice couldn't take the pressure and broke down during the summer. That forced the band to postpone the release of their new EP.

Fortunately Sahra, which had just been accepted at the Rhythmical Music Conservatory (RMC) in Copenhagen, was treated and taught by the finest vocal experts in Europe, and finally she released the EP herself, late 2012. Scandinaviansoul.com: Shortly before the release of ’Sahra da Silva & the Jagged Soul EP’ she got in contact with Andy Collins from ScandinavianSoul.com, whom, through his search for new Scandinavian Soul artists and -music, had found a youtube video with ’Soulmate’ and wanted to play the song in his Radio show, urbanliferadio.se. He frequently did until the end of the show, spring 2014.

Sahra da Silva & the Jagged Soul was performing at the first ever, Scandinavian Soul Festival which took place i Horsens Ny Teater, Denmark, September 2013, among other artists like Norwegian Beady Belle and Danish Barbara Moleko.
WoodRat Music: With a whole bunch new songs, new "tools" and an almost manic drive after finally recovering, Sahra founded the record label, WoodRat Music. With the band she went back in the studio and recorded new songs, and June 2013 she released the single Yours To Keep. Just about a year later they released their debut album, OH, LOVE! Sahra is now on her way to London to perform, amongst other gigs, a showcase at Floridita (former Marquee Club) and a opening gig for Robert Randolph & the Family band at The Brooklyn Bowl inside the O2.
