About this concert

As fundamental parameters of music, the conditions of space, time, and movement have long held a particular fascination for composers. In his composition Contre-espace, premiered in 2019, Sasha Blondeau explores the spatial relationships within a sonic field by distributing individual groups of musicians throughout the space, effectively bringing musical “counter-spaces” to life. As its title suggests, Korean composer Sunghyun Lee engages with geometric concepts in his Suite Geometrica for 16 Players, using them as a starting point for fascinating musical forms, patterns, and movements. Finally, Wandlungen, one of Emmanuel Nunes’s most important works for ensemble, features in the concert, with Ensemble Modern welcoming its long-standing friend Sylvain Cambreling to conduct. In this work, the traditional passacaglia form serves as the starting point for musical developments, reimagined in a more evolved form.
