Artist bio
MWALIM DaPhunkee Professor is an award-winning musician, producer, playwright, filmmaker, educator, and cultural historian whose career spans more than four decades. Equally at home on festival stages, in recording studios, classrooms, and theaters, he has earned an international reputation as one of the most versatile creative voices in contemporary Black American music and culture.

Known as the Blues Griot, Mwalim is a master storyteller whose work bridges Blues, Soul, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Funk, Spoken Word, and Underground Dance Music. His performances are rooted in the African griot tradition, where songs carry history, humor, spirituality, and lived experience. Whether fronting a band with his unmistakable guitar style or delivering intimate solo performances, he embodies the timeless role of the musician as cultural keeper.

A native New Yorker, Mwalim began his professional career while attending the High School of Music & Art, performing at Carnegie Hall before the age of fourteen. His early years found him working as an in-demand session musician and arranger in New York City's recording studios, contributing strings and keyboards to Hip-Hop, R&B, Soul, and Dance recordings before expanding into production, songwriting, and remixing.

Today he is perhaps best known as a founding member of the Grammy-nominated soul-funk band The GroovaLottos, whose groundbreaking recordings have helped redefine contemporary independent soul music. He is also the creative force behind WAMPTRONICA, an Afro-Indigenous collective exploring the intersections of Deep House, Jazz, Soul, and Indigenous musical traditions, and leads The MWALIM Trio, performing original and classic Blues and Soul throughout New England and Canada.

As founder of Polyphonic Studios and Poly-Groove Records, Mwalim has become one of the region's leading independent producers, developing a signature sound known for its warmth, depth, and unmistakable "knock." His productions span Blues, Soul, Hip-Hop, House, Jazz, Spoken Word, and experimental music, earning respect from artists across genres.

Beyond music, Mwalim is an accomplished playwright, director, filmmaker, and multimedia artist. His theatrical works have been presented throughout the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and the United Kingdom, reflecting a lifelong commitment to using the arts as a vehicle for cultural preservation and social engagement. As Artistic Director of the Oversoul Theatre Collective, he continues to develop innovative programming that connects artists with communities throughout the South Coast of Massachusetts.

Mwalim is also a tenured Associate Professor of English, Communications, and Black Studies at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he has taught since 2003. A respected scholar of African American literature, Black performance traditions, storytelling, and media arts, his research explores the relationships between music, history, identity, and community. His work has helped shape generations of artists, writers, and cultural leaders.

Throughout his career, Mwalim has shared stages with artists including Musiq Soulchild, Angie Stone, The Four Tops, George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, KRS-One, The Last Poets, and N'Dambi. His recordings have earned national and international recognition, including multiple New England Urban Music Awards, Native American Music Award nominations, and Grammy recognition through The GroovaLottos.

Whether producing records, writing plays, mentoring young artists, or performing his own original music, MWALIM DaPhunkee Professor continues to honor the traditions that shaped him while creating new pathways for those who follow. His work stands at the crossroads of scholarship, artistry, and community, reminding audiences that music is not merely entertainment—it is memory, movement, and ministry.
