Super psyched to have bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, various John Zorn projects, etc) in town to play trio with Karen Ng and Nick Fraser on October 29th as Burn Down The Capital celebrates 21 years of weird music in Toronto with a throw back line up to one of our first gigs! New avant jazz quartet of Colin Fisher, Will Hunt, Jack Johnston & Cal Adam open the night! It all happens at Standard Time. Details below!
TREVOR DUNN / KAREN NG / NICK FRASER
NYC avant garde bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, John Zorn, etc.) arrives in Toronto playing a special trio set with improvising saxophonist Karen Ng and local drum legend Nick Fraser. A seasoned ingredient of the New York improvised music and experimental rock world, Dunn's playing balances frenetic insect-like note clusters, twisting squeaks and cracks with passages of meandering notes punctuated by thoughtful breaths. Bowed tones stretch out as a backbone to plucked jittering strings. Ng’s inquisitive horn phrases flourish with creaking tones and sputtering whispers. Saxophone notes tie themselves in intricate knots. Fraser, a frequent collaborator with the likes of Tony Malaby, John Kameel-Farah, and of course the Tranzac avant jazz ménage, is a true master of moods, building landscapes with careful brush movements, subtle skin and metal vibrations. He pulls out the full avant swing mode when required, just to carefully deconstruct it into a mutated hobble beat. Come see three heavy improvisers at play.
COLIN FISHER / WILL HUNT / JACK JOHNSTON / CAL ADAM
Guitar maverick Colin Fisher’s new quartet with pianist Will Hunt, bassist Jack Johnston, and percussionist Cal Adam sees them embrace the electric jazz sound. Fisher’s composition style is evident under the built in improvisational flourishes. His wandering psych jazz guitar passages feel matched by Hunt’s investigative key work. The rhythm section keeps the band cooking as they navigate from electric rippers to more languid cosmic explorations.

Artist bio
I've lived in three cities my whole life: Eureka, San Francisco and Brooklyn. The first electric bass player I ever checked out was Stanley Clarke and in 1990 I bought an Alembic. First upright player I got into was Mingus. I stole my mom's 1959 vinyl copy of Ah Um which I still have to this day. One of my first bass teachers gave me an unlabeled cassette with a bunch of great bass excerpts on it. Years later I would discover it was a bunch of Jaco and Sly Stone (mostly Bobby Vega) and Larry Graham. I've been playing bass now for 38 years.

Great time, electric banjo opened up that use to be in the melvins! Trevor and buzz did it again with a cool project. Been into them since Fantomas 25 years ago!
