Thirty years after the release of King Changó’s landmark 1996 self-titled debut album, MELTING POT ALL-STARS brings together original members of the legendary New York City ska band for a special 30th anniversary celebration.
King Changó’s explosive melting pot of ska, reggae, dub, cumbia, Latin rhythms, punk and rock helped establish the band as a pioneer of the Latin alternative movement. Released by David Byrne’s Luaka Bop Records in 1996, the album featured favorites including “Melting Pot,” “Latin Ska,” “Confesión” and “Revolution/Cumbia Reggae.”
The night is also a homecoming. It was at SOB’s that David Byrne first saw King Changó opening for Café Tacuba, an encounter that led to the band signing with his Luaka Bop label.
Three decades later, MELTING POT ALL-STARS return to SOB’s to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the album, the music they helped create, and the wild cultural melting pot that brought it all together.
MELTING POT ALL-STARS features original King Changó members and musicians from the 1996 album: Glenda Lee (bass), Luis “Pulpo” Ruiz (drums), Miguel Oldenburg (guitar), Martin Perna (tenor sax), Michael Wagner (trombone) and Fernando Velez (percussion), along with special guests.

Pioneers of the Latin Ska genre and the Rock en Español movement, King Changó was formed in New York City (USA) in 1994. This musical group blends diverse Anglo and Latin musical styles. Its founding members were (+)José Andrés Blanco Aybar (Blanquito Man), Luis Eduardo Blanco Aybar (Negrito Man), Glenda Lee, Luis Ruiz (El Pulpo), Rubén Verde, and Miguel Oldenburg, Fernando Vélez, Martin Adrián Cunningham, Mike Wagner. Following Blanquito Man's passing in 2017, King Changó is led by his brother Negrito Man and Tao Ng as musical director and producer, along with a new crew of Venezuelan musicians.
