Meet David Ramael: the maestro who’s redefining what it means to lead an orchestra in the 21st century. As the founder and artistic director of Boho Strings Antwerp — a trailblazing string orchestra based in Borgerhout — David has made it his mission to prove that classical music can be innovative, socially relevant, and, dare we say, a little fun (powdered wigs not included).

With Boho Strings Antwerp, David has crafted a unique artistic vision that marries musical excellence with thought-provoking storytelling. Under his direction, the ensemble has premiered and championed works by contemporary composers like Wim Henderickx, Salim Dada, and Nabil Benabdeljalil, while breathing new life into classical masterworks. Boho Strings’ performances have graced major stages in Belgium and beyond, earning critical acclaim for their artistry, emotional depth, and dynamic programming. In 2018, the ensemble released its debut album, Nostalgia, featuring Henderickx’s music, which Gramophone Magazine praised as “unmatched in its dynamism and unanimity of response.”

And then there’s the David who steps off the podium. Open rehearsals, pre-concert chats, and post-show mingles are part of his signature approach to breaking down barriers between artists and audiences. But what truly sets David apart is his commitment to making music resonate far beyond the concert hall. Through Boho Strings’ Be A He(a)ro initiative, he has expanded the orchestra’s impact to address pressing societal challenges, from mental well-being and suicide prevention to Parkinson’s disease. For David, music isn’t just a performance; it’s a force for connection and positive change.

David’s credentials as a conductor extend far beyond Boho Strings Antwerp. He has led prestigious orchestras such as the Belgian National Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique Royale de Liège, and the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. He’s also brought fresh perspectives to the operatic stage as a regular at Zomeropera Alden Biesen, where he’s known for infusing performances with vitality and energy.
