**How far can musical identity be imagined—and what becomes possible beyond its roots?** This is the question that the **Beyond the Roots Large Ensemble** has explored for many years. Within its transcultural sonic universe, instruments and musical practices from diverse traditions meet on equal terms, forming a richly layered orchestral texture. Musical impulses from Persian, Indian, and Japanese traditions enter into dialogue with Turkish folk music, Central European art music, and contemporary jazz, creating a sound world that understands cultural heritage not as a boundary, but as the starting point for new artistic perspectives.
For this project, the ensemble is led by **Antonis Anissegos**, a founding member whose artistic vision has been central to the ensemble since its inception. He presents **BLESSINGS**, a new composition exploring interconnectedness, memory, and spiritual experience. Inspired by *Anam Cara* by the Irish philosopher **John O'Donohue**, the work reflects on the wisdom of Celtic culture. The Irish expression *Anam Cara*—meaning *soul friend*—describes a profound form of human and spiritual companionship. In Anissegos' musical setting, these ideas unfold as a poetic sonic journey that transcends cultural boundaries and opens new spaces for listening.

Artist bio
Golnar Shahyar is an award-winning Iranian/Canadian vocalist, poet, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer based in Vienna, acclaimed for risk-embracing, genre-dissolving music that places the voice at the center—as instrument, narrator, and catalyst. An internationally touring artist, she appears at leading venues and festivals across Europe, North America, and beyond with multiple projects and bands. Her debut album *Tear Drop* (2022) drew wide praise, earning a 2023 German Jazz Prize nomination, and she received 2nd prize at the Austrian Jazz Prize 2025 (Best Live Act). Shahyar writes for small and large ensembles alike—premiering work with Vision String Quartet and performing as soloist/composer with Tonkünstler-Orchester and NDR Bigband—while weaving improvisation, poetry, and storytelling into vivid, empathetic performances. Drawing from West Asian and North African traditions alongside contemporary European and American currents, she crafts musical worlds where intimacy and daring meet. Beyond her solo work, she leads and collaborates in projects including Golnar & Mahan, Choub, and Gabbeh.
