In Birdsong, Amsterdam Sinfonietta and the British vocal ensemble VOCES8 perform together for the first time in a programme inspired by nature. Works for strings are interwoven with vocal highlights.
Barber’s compelling Adagio for Strings evokes a universal feeling of sorrow, beauty and hope. In Agnus Dei, his later choral version, this effect is even more powerful. The version for choir and strings, performed by Amsterdam Sinfonietta and the British vocal ensemble VOCES8, will leave no one untouched.
The Lark Ascending, the heavenly song of the skylark, also reaches greater heights in this special arrangement for solo violin, strings and choir. More birds make themselves heard in Biber’s playful imitations of the nightingale and the cuckoo, in Elgar’s mysterious Owls, or fade into silence in Tin’s The Saddest Noise. In this concert, where nature is at the centre, you will hear music ranging from the medieval mystic Hildegard von Bingen to a new work by Mathilde Wantenaar, in her distinctive lyrical and enchanting style.

Amsterdam Sinfonietta comprises 23 top-level musicians who play together in symbiosis. Led by artistic director Candida Thompson, the orchestra tours all over the world with adventurous programmes and crossovers with other musical genres and art forms.
