Arturo Sandoval (born November 6, 1949) is a legendary Cuban-American jazz trumpeter, pianist, and composer. A protégé of Dizzy Gillespie, he is celebrated for his dizzying high-note range and technical precision. A 10-time Grammy winner, Emmy winner, and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, he is a titan of Afro-Cuban jazz.Early Life and The Irakere YearsBorn into a poor family in Artemisa, Cuba, Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at age 12. Despite government hostility toward jazz during his mandatory military service, he fell deeply in love with the genre.
