Von Hertzen Brothers are celebrating their 25th anniversary by performing for the first time with a large symphony orchestra.
This has been awaited like a moonrise! The Von Hertzen Brothers will celebrate their 25th anniversary at the Music Hall with the Vantaa Entertainment Orchestra and the Vaskivuori High School choirs. A unique concert experience is guaranteed to touch the emotions of both the audience and the performers!
Great songs from a great band. A symphony orchestra composed of top musicians. The brightest arrangers in the country. Vaskivuori High School choirs. Conductor Valter Soosalu.
This year marks 25 years since the release of the Von Hertzen Brothers' first album. Brothers Mikko, Kie and Jonne, as well as permanent band member Markus Pajakkala, are celebrating their quarter-century anniversary by performing for the first time with a large symphony orchestra. And when they get down to business, they do it the way it should be done: with a big heart, good energy and uncompromising quality.
"The Vantaa Entertainment Orchestra has a convincing history of doing this type of work. The orchestra is assembled from freelancers who have experience playing this type of music and who want to be part of this particular gig. Conductor Valter Soosalu is a specialist in progressive music. In addition, drummer Sami Kuoppamäki, who will be playing at the gig, has previously collaborated with VVO and knows how it works," Mikko says.
The Music Hall will feature songs that are important to fans, from Flowers and Rust to New Day Rising, in new and very surprising arrangements. "We have given the arrangers complete freedom. We expressed the hope that at least the original feeling would be preserved in the majority of the songs. Or that that feeling would at least not be completely lost," says Kie.
According to Mikko, the combination of a symphony orchestra, band and choir opens up new possibilities for songs that have been too challenging to perform at gigs. At the Music Hall, these rarer gems will once again be able to flourish live. “It’s exciting to see how the whole thing works when the powerful atmospheres of the songs no longer come from your own wrist or the beating of drums. We trust that the arrangers will get the best out of the songs.” The songs are being arranged by familiar top names Sampo Kasurinen, Rolf Gustavson, Pessi Levanto, Marzi Nyman and Jarmo Saari.
A concert with a large orchestra has always been the trio's dream. However, it has been repeatedly delayed by music-making, recording and touring. Now the long-standing dream is coming true. "Performing at the Helsinki Music Centre with a fifty-piece orchestra, band and choir is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us. I don't think a concert like this on this scale will happen again anytime soon," says Mikko.
The Vantaa Entertainment Orchestra has also been dreaming of a joint concert with VHB for over twenty years. Artistic director Lauri Porra, concertmaster Ilkka Lehtonen and executive director Janne Rönnbäck all admit to being big fans of the band.
“The Von Hertzen Brothers have made music skillfully and with reverence since the beginning. The expertise, operating methods and polished concept of the Vantaa Entertainment Orchestra are as if made to serve this level of work. A concert at the Music Hall is sure to be an unforgettable experience for both the audience and the performers,” says Rönnbäck. “The brothers are skilled musicians, but also very warm-hearted people. Their work and brand contain values that everyone who loves nature and appreciates people wants to associate with themselves. We are delighted to be able to collaborate with them.”
The internationally renowned and multi-award winning Von Hertzen Brothers have remained true to their elusive yet highly recognizable and addictive style throughout their existence. Their atmospheric, cinematic music is a distinctive blend of progressive rock, classic rock and folk.
The band has toured in over twenty countries, mainly in England and elsewhere in Europe. In the USA, the album Love Remains the Same was selected as one of the TOP 25 progressive rock albums of the 2000s. In addition to rock club and festival gigs, the band has also played acoustic concert hall gigs in recent years.
“It’s actually quite exciting that we’ve only become familiar with concert halls in the last three years. However, our music is quite versatile,” says Jonne. “Moving from rock clubs to halls was a big leap for us mentally. The leap from concert halls to the Helsinki Music Centre is even bigger. Although I’ve been to concerts at the Helsinki Music Centre, I’ve never thought before that I could play there myself one day.”
The anniversary concert date, October 10, was chosen based on the band's first Tavastia gig. "Our first album, Experience, was released on September 10, 2001. It started when Mikko started composing and writing songs while living in India and invited Jonne and me to play them with him. We decided to make the album as a project, without any specific plans for the future," Kie says.
The album's release was followed by a three-show mini-tour. It ended on October 10th at the Tavastia club in Helsinki. "The Tavastia gig was the first one, which we all thought was good. We got the feeling that this was pretty fun. That we could continue this. So here we are now celebrating the 25th anniversary with the Vantaa Entertainment Orchestra, in the sanctuary of Finnish orchestral music," Mikko says.

Artist bio
Von Hertzen Brothers are Jonne, Kie and Mikko Von Hertzen.
Initially playing in separate bands, the brothers came together in 2000. Since forming the band they have become one of the most important and influential rock acts in their homeland of Finland, and one of the few acts to have successfully crossed into other markets in Europe and beyond.
Musically drawing on elements of rock, folk, progressive and pop, the sounds, rhythms and melodies the brothers create reflect their unique upbringing - both musically and personally. Weaving in the mysticism of Finnish folklore and the countryside they grew up immersed in.
The band have won many awards including an Emma Award (The Finnish Equivalent of a Grammy) and achieved chart success and significant airplay on rock led radio stations both at home and in the UK.
A stunning live act, the band have performed in 21 countries. The artists they have played with, from Neil Young to Biffy Clyro to Opeth - just hints at the breadth and depth of their music.

What fans are saying
Awesome gig. Third time I've seen them and this topped them all.
First time at the Waterloo Music Bar and what a fantastic venue. Drink prices didn't seem extortionate.
