Artist bio
Tre. Charles is an Alternative/Indie Soul artist who invites listeners into his world with an expressive blend of soulful undertones, powerful lyrics, and emotive crooning. His music serves as both a refuge and a guide, helping you navigate the depths of human emotion. Raised on the East Coast, moving from city to city, Charles was immersed in a variety of cultures and experiences. This nomadic upbringing shaped his sound, with each new place leaving an indelible mark on his musical identity; rooted in soul but never confined by it.

His sound draws comparisons to modern talents like Sampha, Hozier, and James Blake, while also evoking echoes of classic pioneers such as Muddy Waters, Bill Withers, and Lauryn Hill. Pitchfork contributor Brian Howe describes Tre. Charles’s sound as “stretched and shifted vocal harmonies, and long-tailed reverbs and delays that hum like cathedrals.” He adds, “This labyrinth of sound, blurred at the edges yet sharply etched in the middle, is where we find his just-woke-up voice and glinting guitar, his fingers tweezing jazzy splinters from thick barre chords. The overall effect is calming, but in a transfixing, time-halting way, like dancing candlelight.”

Charles’s distinctive sound has earned him accolades from industry insiders and support from brands like D’Angelico Guitars, who have officially endorsed him as an artist. He has also been nominated for Best R&B Artist at the Carolina Music Awards (2022), won the Virginias Favorite Award at the Richmond International Film Festival (2022), and was dubbed “the future of music” at the 2025 NXNE music festival in Toronto.

A seasoned performer, Tre. Charles has graced stages across the U.S., from prestigious festivals like Newport Jazz Festival, Hopscotch Music Festival, and the D.C. National Cherry Blossom Festival, to venues across the country. He’s been featured on CBS and NBC, and his artistry has a way of making every performance feel intimate and personal. His debut EP Currently. (2023) garnered attention from publications such as NPR, INDY Week, Wonderland, Notion, Rated R&B, and more. The Currently EP was named to NPR station WNRN’s “Top 100 Albums of the Year 2023” list.

Charles’s growing list of collaborators includes rising stars like Yasmin Williams, Jalen Ngonda, Lo Moon, Devon Gilfillian, and Bartees Strange, as well as world-renowned acts like Fantastic Negrito, Tank and the Bangas, Tune-Yards, Arrested Development, and Digable Planets. His recent performances alongside blues legend Cedric Burnside and viral family band Infinity Song further showcase his versatility and depth as an artist.

In addition to his musical journey, Tre. Charles has used his platform to engage in meaningful conversations about mental health and his personal experiences. He has been featured on TEDx, the CALM app, and has participated in panel discussions, where he candidly reflects on his own growth and challenges. As an artist and storyteller, Tre. Charles remains deeply committed to creating music that is both vulnerable and true to his own journey. His unique sound has not only entertained but also provided healing to his listeners. With the release of his latest EP, Here We Are., Charles is ushering in a new era—one that elevates his artistry and vision to even greater heights.
