Martin Wiren Biography

Martin Wirén, the Swedish saxophonist and composer best known for his work as the expressive saxophone player in his crossover project Bear Garden, announces a brand new solo album which sees the artist - now under his own name - venture for more Jazz/Classical character and sound. The album ”Mirrorlike” is due out November 24th, 2025 via Bolero Recordings.

After several years of focusing on his artistic genre-crossing artist project Bear Garden - with Europe tours and ads on BBC6Music as "Beat of the week" and American KEXP, viral TikToks, great reviews in many major Scandinavian publications and major support across jazz and experimental streaming service editorials - Wirén is now releasing an album where he shows off his solo saxophone technique, that he has developed for the past 12 years.

The music paints with a new palette, while still keeping focus on his saxophone playing. The new recordings have a fluent feeling and expressive harmonic structure, creating a wave of colorful sounds that takes the listener on an emotional journey. Ranging the saxophone from a low register to a high whistling sound in the upper register creates a combination and feeling of mountains swell as the deep sea.

”The album is a surreal fantasy which mixes the serious, with the simple and beautiful. I like to create a world that is far from our own and write music accordingly.”

”This is the way I hear music. The sound of this many notes in this speed creates a cohesive color that speaks for itself. The harmonic colors of this music speaks to me on a spiritual level.”

The new direction Wirén takes his music also coincides with an urge for exploring smaller, more intimate settings.

”As a saxophonist, the saxophone will always the main character in my music, but creating an album where I play, write and produce everything was something I just had to try and it was a big challenge. The saxophone takes the lead while other woodwinds and piano creates the atmosphere. The compositions were both a great challenge to write and even harder to play, I’m glad I did it.”

”I wanted to do something without a big group, more intimate, beautiful but still expressive. I try to play without a framework and push myself to my own limits, both physically and as a spiritual artist. I need to constantly explore new sides of myself, and this is me now.”

”I thought to myself, let’s just take some time in silence and see what comes out.”

The album ”Mirrorlike” is due out November 24th, 2025 via Bolero Recordings.
