Yasu Cub Biography
Yasu Cub is a Tokyo-based band led by Atlanta-born songwriter Jacob Oki Ahearn. Blending elements of indie folk (Hovvdy, Death Cab for Cutie), slowcore (Red House Painters, Bedhead), and dream pop (Real Estate, Turnover), their discography includes: debut album Highways (Jan. 2023), and 2 EPs entitled Elevator (Feb. 2024) and Room Without a Ceiling (Nov. 2024).
Following a domestic band tour with In the Valley Below and an international solo acoustic tour across the U.S., Yasu Cub enters a new chapter with the upcoming album, My early years, your spiral arms (March 2026). Written and recorded between Tokyo, small-town Georgia, and the Pacific Northwest, this album’s conceptual origins can be traced back to a laundry room in a college dormitory where a friend’s astrophysics textbook lay open on a table showing a visual chart of the “spiral arms galaxy.” Struck by the anthropomorphization of the cosmos, it was as though one were embraced by the universe.
While expanding outwardly to the macrocosm, the album also dives into the microcosm of human life: picking at grass in a park, driving to an airport shuttle under indigo skies, an immigrant family riding a ferry crossing the Pacific Ocean, a part-time worker at the dry cleaners, lovers reminiscing between the waves and coast, two high school friends listening to Nick Drake by a lake on the eve of graduation.
Moments both ethereal and concrete, eternal and liminal, weave throughout the album.
