About this concert
New Orleans-based R&B and gospel singer John Boutté teams up with Vancouver’s sassiest mini-orchestra Queer as Funk and soul sensation Dawn Pemberton for an entertaining concert of Motown, soul and funk music spiced with Louisiana-style dynamism. A BlueShore at CapU favourite, John Boutté’s shows are all about energy and soul. His gorgeous voice and deep groove make standards like “Fly Me To the Moon” fresh again. He can evoke Sam Cooke, but his spirit is all New Orleans. Reviewing Boutté’s latest album, A Well Tempered Boutté, OffBeat raves, “This is above all a singer’s album, and you’re unlikely to hear a better vocal disc this year.” Local sensation Queer as Funk are renowned for their tight rhythm section, blazing horns, and fabulous vocals. The nonet brings together the city’s best musicians in a high-energy dance band, whose repertoire ranges from classics of the ’60s and ’70s (Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder) to contemporary pop favourites (Amy Winehouse, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake). There’s nothing this tight-knit band loves more than performing together, and that love is palpable to audiences everywhere. Joining Boutté and Queer as Funk on stage is Vancouver's doyenne of funk Dawn Pemberton. “Her honey-soaked pipes have earned her a coveted spot among Canada's top vocalists,” says the Vancouver Sun. Opening the show is Terminal City Brass Band. The Vancouver group plays a full-on range of good vibes, from trad jazz and to funk to anything else that crosses the minds of players Michael Coury (trumpet), Tim Sars (sax), Brian Harding (trombone), Marc Lindy (tuba), and Liam MacDonald (percussion).

Really enjoyed the show —although we expected performances by Dawn. Disappointed about that as we always love DP, but the group performances were wonderful & we discovered Noah Wallace —loved him!

Dawn Pemberton Biography

Dawn Pemberton’s creative voice has been an essential part of the Vancouver music scene for the better part of a decade, and she can often be found tearing it up as a vocalist, teacher, facilitator, choir director, and ‘go to girl’ for live performances and studio sessions. She’s well known as the ‘secret weapon’ of funk and soul groups all over our region.

A gifted and intuitive artist, Dawn expresses herself with a sense of adventure, quirkiness, and serious groove, all filtered and shaped through her own unique and dynamic vision. A passionate songwriter and performer, Dawn’s unmistakable voice sounds equally at home, whether she’s belting out gospel or bringing it down to deliver a soulful love ballad or a jazz standard.

Over the years, Dawn has shared the stage with the likes of Maceo Parker, The Sojourners, John Boutté and Dutch Robinson, but if you really want to experience Dawn’s magic, there’s nothing better than seeing her perform with her own band.

Vibrant, genuine, and soulful, Dawn always creates a unique and dynamic listening experience that positively soars in a live situation.
