The Matt Cahill Combo Biography
MATT CAHILL COMBO – THE MIDNIGHT SHOW
Matt Cahill is a guitarist, bandleader, and songwriter from Perth, Western Australia, with a deep-rooted passion for 1940s swing, early jazz, and rockin’ rhythm & blues. Drawing on the rhythmic drive of Freddie Green and the melodic finesse of Charlie Christian and Oscar Moore, he leads The Matt Cahill Combo — a band dedicated to American roots music and the golden era of swing and jazz.
Cahill cut his teeth in the early ’90s with Perth rock ’n’ roll outfit The Calhoons before discovering jazz, a fascination that grew through artists like Vince Jones, Art Blakey, and classic crooners. A chance jam session led to joining Rusty & The Dragstrip Trio, resulting in a decade of high-energy shows at Perth’s Mustang Bar, two albums on U.S. label Wild Records, and international appearances across Europe and the U.S. Along the way, he’s shared stages with legends including Ruth Brown, The Collins Kids, Chris Isaak, and Bill Haley’s Original Comets.
After a decade on the rockabilly circuit, Cahill dedicated himself to mastering jazz and swing guitar, studying the American Songbook, taking lessons in New York with Benny Goodman alumnus Chris Flory, and performing with jazz musicians in Spain, France, and Germany.
His debut album, The Midnight Show, recorded at Crank Studio with Perth’s finest players — Lachlan Glover, Bronton Ainsworth, Alex Parkinson, Kieran Barnes, Richard Timms, and Adrian Hicks — is a dynamic blend of swing, jazz, and rockabilly influences. Featuring ten original songs, the record captures his unique songwriting voice, vintage style, and love of timeless grooves perfect for Lindy dancers, jazz aficionados, and roots music fans.
“I wanted to create something that can’t be pigeonholed,” Cahill says. “It’s my own feel, my own melodies — a blend of everything I love.”
