MOHAMED ABOZEKRY Biography
Mohamed Abozekry (B.1991, Cairo), Franco-Egyptian music composer, singer, and Oud virtuoso.
Graduated at his 15 from the Arabic Oud House in Cairo. He was the youngest oud teacher in the Arab world, and two years later, in 2009, he received the first prize at the International Oud Competition in Syria.
After having had this recognition, Mohamed decided to take an alternative path to dig further by continuing his music education in classical music composition. Therefore, he moved to France at eighteen, and that’s where his career as an artist started internationally.
Abozekry makes part of these musicians who left early their hometown and got adopted in Europe (France) at a very young age. The battle of being back and forth between France and Egypt created a big door of inspiration for his work. So many artists met on his path, collaborations between jazz bands, gypsy, classic orchestras and Electronic artists.
Following his interest in composing for cinema, Mohamed Abozekry obtained his master's degree in Music Film-Scoring (MAAAV) at Lyon II University and scored for several short movies, and T.V shows such as Maktoub Alaya (K Media), Balto (Watch it), and Egar Adeem (K Media).
His name appeared in many well know venues such as the Lincoln center for the performing arts NYC, Kennedy Center Washington, Festival Jazz à Vienne, Lyon Opera House, Paris Philharmonic, Arabic world institute of Paris, GlobalFest NYC, Nancy Jazz Festival, CosmoJazz Festival, Boston University, Berkley University, NYU Abu Dhabi.
Released 4 albums so far. From “Chaos” (Rue Stendhal - 2013) to “Ring Road’ (Jazz Village - 2015) with his French Jazz band (HeeJaz) in France. Then he presented his album “Karkadé” (Jazz Village - 2016) that was a trip back to the source with a team of traditional musicians in Cairo. Later he came up with his “Trio ABOZEKRYs’album (Molpé Music - 2018) where he collaborated with his brother Abdallah Abozekry (Saz), and Nicolas Thé (Drums).
Today Abozekry dedicates a big part of his work on film scoring, and performs extensively overseas with his two new projects.
The Duo with Ersoj Kazimov, and his 5tet in Paris with Camille Maussion on Saxophone, Mark Priore on Piano, Juan Villarroel on Bass, and Théo Moutou on Drums. His debut new album as a singer songwriter “Roh El Fouad” will be released in April 2024.
