Lt Headtrip Biography
Lt Headtrip is a rapper, producer, and head of indie hip-hop label, WATKK. Outside of his own steady output since 2008, Headtrip has overseen the creation of dozens of albums, booked and promoted events throughout NYC for local and national acts, and performed all over the United States, all while acting as head engineer and manager of WATKK. As an artist, powerful performances and off-kilter yet thoughtful lyricism have garnered him respect as a diverse, intense musician on and off stage.
Headtrip first cut his teeth hosting open mic nights in his hometown of Kent, OH, which holds a historically anti-authoritarian posture. His middle school music teacher focused on music and video technology, affording young creatives the opportunity to learn editing software starting in sixth grade, while other teachers encouraged his natural creative talents, helping his skills in visual art and performance bloom as well. By high school, he was recording, producing, and packaging his own projects.
With the lofty goal of joining the NYC underground hip-hop scene, aiming specifically for Def Jux torch carriers and similar oddball musicians, Headtrip moved to New York at 18 and began working with DJ and producer, Samurai Banana. Their group would eventually grow into the Karma Kids, adding the unique flavors of Googie, Gruff Lion, and Duncecap, who became notorious for their unrestrained live performances and distinct, inventive styles.
Headtrip, a sought-after artist and diligent project manager, has booked and performed with underground legends such as Armand Hammer, Open Mike Eagle, Quelle Chris, Onry Osborn, Beans, and Mega Ran. He’s also shared the stage with international stars such as Biz Markie, Slick Rick, Ghostface Killah, and Action Bronson. During his time working in NYC, he collaborated with members of Backwoodz Studioz, such as billy woods and Elucid, artists on Reservoir Sound, namely A.M. Breakups and MC Eleven, and artists on Uncommon Records, Smoker’s Cough, and many others.
Headtrip continues to create music, visual art, and videos while maintaining a community of ambitious artists.
