Event websiteAbout this concert
This November, Yo-Yo Ma will perform Bach’s complete suites for solo cello for the first time in one evening at home, in Boston. It’s music that he has offered to communities on all six continents, in moments of joy and in times of tragedy. For him it exemplifies how culture helps us to seek truth, build trust, and act in service.
This is more than a concert for Yo-Yo: it is an invitation to listen to each other and the world around us, to celebrate our community and the ways in which people all over the world—and here in Massachusetts—are bringing us together, creating shared space for connection, reflection, and action, and imagining a better future.
Live broadcast, one night only!
Enjoy a live simulcast of the event as it happens, from the immersive stage at the HOPE Center for the Arts. Hear every note and get an up-close view of Yo-Yo Ma’s artistry.
People across Massachusetts will come together in libraries, theaters, and community spaces to enjoy a powerful, uplifting evening of music, free of charge and for one night only.
Celebrate the power of connection, reflection, and imagination: join friends and neighbors for this must-see live broadcast!

Yo-Yo Ma Biography
Yo-Yo Ma is a world-famous Chinese-American cellist. He is considered one of the best cellists in the world and has made over 50 albums.
He was born to Chinese parents living in Paris. He began to study the cello with his father at age 4 and soon came with his family to New York, where he spent most of his formative years. Later, his principal teacher was Leonard Rose at the Juilliard School. He sought out a traditional liberal arts education to expand upon his conservatory training, graduating from Harvard University in 1976.
Yo-Yo Ma has been called "the most omnivorous of all cellists" by critics and indeed possesses a far more eclectic repertoire than typical for a classical player. He has performed and recorded Baroque pieces on period instruments, American bluegrass music, traditional Chinese melodies, the Argentinian tangos of Astor Piazzolla, Brazilian music, the soundtrack to the film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Philip Glass's minimalist score of Naqoyqatsi in addition to numerous recordings of the standard classical repertoire. His latest CD is a collaboration with other musicians for the Memoirs of a Geisha soundtrack.
Nowadays, his main performance instrument is a very fine Montagnana cello from Venice, made in 1733. He also plays regurlarly a Davidoff Stradivarius from 1712.
