About this concert
Simon Popp first invited Bex Burch to collaborate at the Munich-based improvisation seriesPercussive Maintenancelast year. A powerful meeting on whichthis duo continues to build; sharing a deep fascination and joyful curiosity for sound, playand improvisation. In their duo, their distinct musical languages merge, playing between structure and freedom, tension and release, sounds and rhythm. Both artists have been nominated for this year’s Deutscher Jazzpreis. Whether combining the rhythmic timbres of wood, metal and audience claps or duetting with the atmospheric and elegiac echoed sounds of water dripping into a metal basin, Bex Burch is a composer, percussionist, producer and improviser who emphasises space, repetition and aspects of chaos. These themes characterise an ongoing approach she describes as “messy minimalism”. Burch’s critically acclaimed 2023 solo album, ‚There is only love and fear‘ was released via Chicago’s International Anthem and named The Guardian’s Contemporary Album of the Month. She runs the label and post-punk band, Vula Viel, the domestic music event, Kantine Musik, and has collaborated with influential artists including Thomas Sekgura, Leafcutter John as part of ‘Boing!’, Tamar Osborn and Danalogue in ‘Flock’, Peter Zummo, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Ben LaMar Gay, Dan Bitney and Macie Stewart. Munich-based drummer and composer Simon Popp navigates polyrhythmic structures with a keen sense of timing and atmosphere. He contrasts earthy and airy sounds, blurs the boundaries between the electronic and acoustic worlds, and makes a powerful statement about what contemporary percussion music can be.Popp studied jazz drumming in Munich and explores the intersections of jazz, ambient, and electronic music through his solo work and projects such as Fazer, 9ms, Poeji, and Polygonia & Popp. His solo albums Laya, Devi, and Blizz have received international acclaim, particularly within the vinyl community. As The Line Of Best Fit praised: „this is music you can get totally lost in, where the lines between organic and electric are blurred so as to be indistinguishable.“ In addition to recognition from magazines like Clash, Juno, and Ransom Note, Bleep compared his work to that of experimental pioneers Philip Glass and Steve Reich.

Simon Popp Biography

Exploration and play are at the core of Simon Popp’s creative process. Trained in jazz drumming and polyrhythm, the Bavarian-born artist draws from a vast array of percussive instruments to build his expansive sound palette.
Popp's ravenous musical curiosity resonates throughout his extensive output, both as a solo artist or through his collaborative projects like Fazer, 9ms, Poeji, or Polygonia & Simon Popp. His solo albums Laya, Devi and Blizz make use of rhythms as storytelling mechanisms. Contrasting light and dark, organic and synthetic sounds, his compositions engage in a dance of subtle complexities, enticing the listener into the practice of close listening. The Line Of Best Fit praised Popp’s work with “music you can get totally lost in, where the lines between organic and electric are blurred so as to be indistinguishable." Alongside acclaim from the likes of Clash, Juno and Ransom Note, Bleep drew comparisons between Popp and experimental heroes Philip Glass and Steve Reich.

"Simon Popp is one of Fazer's drummers. Influenced by percussionist of the east he just did his thing and recorded an album of
immense deepness and rhythmical convergence. I'm collecting these obscure drummer solo records for years and then a young men comes along and makes them all sound boring.“ Growing Bin Records

„ [...] The Munich based musician weaves a tapestry of wondroud melodies and percussive elements across a record which is as
deep and poetic as it is danceable. " Ramson Note

„Popp's 'Holort' Is A Percussive Workout." Clash Magazine

"At its best, this is music you can get totally lost in, where the lines between organic and electric are blurred so as to be indistinguishable.“ The Line Of Best Fit
