Sailor Boyfriend Biography
Sailor Boyfriend is a late stage synthpop outfit that Andy Waldron's worn since 2017. Originally a duo with guitarist Alex Mercuri (Long Neck, Pom Pom Squad), the now solo, Brooklyn-based project acts like if Brandon Flowers dropped The Book of Mormon and picked up "The Phantom Tollbooth"; that is, with a "tone [existing] somewhere between sincerity and absurdity" (Various Small Flames).
This engaging mesh of performance art, shtick, and rock and roll moves has shared bills with Water From Your Eyes, Ike Ufomadu, Porches, River L. Ramirez and more across eight years and counting; actively touring "queer anthems of resistance for when you need to scream into the void" (Them) from clubs and festivals to public access television and variety shows.
As he wraps up a third LP – an industrial satire called "Worksong" – Andy continues bearing the consequences of a grave deal the Devil struck up with him in exchange for mild lactose intolerance: lively production skills akin to "an arcade on a giant hover board [flown] to Antarctica" (SMALL ALBUMS), collaborations with fellow, genre-fluid artists like Little Hag (“Would It Kill You?”) and Sun Kin (“Til I’m Whole (Sailor Boyfriend Remix)”), and a singular ability to make "space [to] dance ourselves clean of fatalism, even if for one fleeting moment" (THE DELI).
