Phornax Biography
Phornax, inspired by the name Fornax (Furnace), carries within its essence the intensity and transformation that fire represents. Like a furnace shaped by raw heat, Phornax's sound is vibrant, mature, and intense—made to ignite the hearts of the most demanding headbangers.
Founded in 2009 by Cristiano Poschi (vocals) and Maurício Dariva (drums), the band solidified with the addition of Deivid Moraes on guitar, elevating their technical and energetic levels. In 2011, they released the single "Silent War," a precursor to the EP of the same name, and in 2012, they officially released their album, lyrically exploring the Apocalypse as a "silent war."
After a hiatus of more than a decade, Phornax was reborn in 2024 with a new lineup and a tour schedule that included two editions of Phornax Fest. Upon their return, tickets sold out, and critics praised the setlist's blend of nostalgia and renewal.
Sfinge Lima arrived on bass with a reputation that predates the instrument: one of the most renowned bassists in Rio Grande do Sul rock and metal. Formerly of Crossfire, a pioneering band in Brazilian heavy metal, Sfinge also played for the Le Bizarro project and was a key player at Metal Warhead. On stage, his low-end touch and precise groove brought new power to Phornax's classic and new songs. The audience, accustomed to seeing him dictate the rhythm on festival stages, received every note with enthusiasm: "The stage vibrated when Sfinge unleashed that bass line in 'Silent War,'" commented a recent review, highlighting his magnetic presence.
Eduardo Martinez, meanwhile, added layers of sophistication to his guitar playing. Known for his time with the bands Panic and Hangar, Martinez is celebrated for his sharp riffs and elaborate solos that defy virtuosity. In his first show with Phornax, he demonstrated complete harmony with Deivid Moraes, creating a guitar duo capable of alternating between piercing melodies and grandiose harmonies. Critics noted that "Martinez brought freshness to the old songs, recreating them without losing the soul of the original," a rare feat in reunions of classic bands.
With Sfinge and Martinez, Phornax not only returned to what they did best, but also expanded their sonic arsenal. On the "Silent War Tour," the band thrilled fans at shows across Brazil, opening for names like Tim "Ripper" Owens, Kiko Loureiro, Edu Falaschi, and MasterPlan. Each performance reaffirmed that, even after years away from the stage, Phornax remains at full throttle—now reinforced by two musicians who infuse technique, charisma, and passion into every chord.
Phornax continues its journey of fire and steel, always faithful to the spirit that gave it its name. With Sfinge Lima and Eduardo Martinez tasked with fueling the fire, the future promises to be as intense as the history the band has forged since 2009.
