Hevelwood Biography

Like an archival image dragged through an old photocopier, Hevelwood takes folk stories both ancient and new and overlays them with digital fuzz and uncertainty.

A producer and songwriter hailing from Leeds, UK, Hevelwood straddles the world of traditional and acoustic folk and electronic indie. He has released 2 EPs of folk song interpretations and his debut LP Of Greatness Receding was released in Autumn 2023. The record features a blend of traditional English folk songs and originals setting stories of power and resistance in lush production, biting percussion and abrasive textures that disintegrate on touch.

An accomplished and thoughtful live performer, Hevelwood's sets lean into the intimacy and immediacy of a stripped back acoustic set from the raw power of a cappella ballads to richly layered three-part harmonies.

Tim’s process developed over two seasons as host of innovative digital folk club podcast Old Tunes Fresh Takes. The podcast invited musicians of all styles and abilities to create their own interpretations of folk songs and featured guests such as Stewart Lee, Debbie Armour (Burd Ellen), Anna RG (Anna & Elizabeth), Martin Green (Lau) and Olugbenga Adelekan (Metronomy). The project gave Hevelwood the opportunity to shape a new aesthetic in realtime whilst going deep into the world of traditional song with a likeminded community of producers and artists.

Of Greatness Receding is the most complete statement of that aesthetic to date, taking sonic influence from the likes of Bon Iver, Sam Amidon, Haiku Salut, Radiohead, Saya Gray and Lomelda as well as contemporary songwriters like Anaïs Mitchell, Sufjan Stevens and Andy Shauf.
