About this concert
On Friday, October 17 at 7:00 PM, join us at City Winery New York for a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Don Blackman — pianist, singer, songwriter, and one of the most influential voices in jazz, funk, and soul. I’m honored to be part of this incredible evening, sharing the stage with fellow artists to celebrate the timeless music and legacy of a true genius. Don’s songs have touched generations, blending groove, sophistication, and soul in a way that still moves us today. If you know my performances, you know I’ll bring authenticity, passion, and love to the stage as we honor his legacy the right way. ✨ A night of music, memories, and soul — don’t miss it.

Therealshakar Biography

TheRealShakar (stylized @therealshakar), is a Brooklyn-born vocalist, songwriter, and multi-genre artist whose work spans R&B, hip-hop, soul, indie rock, and blues.

In 2016, Shakar’s artistry reached two major milestones. First, he released his debut hip-hop EP The Prognosis under the moniker WillHeDoGoodOr (@WillHeDoGoodOr), introducing raw lyricism and storytelling that reflected his Brooklyn roots. That same year, he became one of only four winners of the Apollo Theater’s “Making a Star” contest, chosen out of thousands, and performed on the Apollo stage with R&B crooner Tank. His journey was documented in a four-part web mini-series.

As TheRealShakar, he has released a wide range of recordings, including his acclaimed cover of Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do for Love”, which has surpassed 100,000 streams, earned over 1,600 monthly listeners, and landed on more than 1,000 organic playlists worldwide.

Shakar has collaborated with a diverse list of artists and producers including DJ Disciple of NYC, O.C. of D.I.T.C., PF Cuttin, Tammy Lucas, Irene Blackman, Rell, Grammy-winning producer/engineer Ken Lewis, and reggae star Popcaan. He also co-released the indie rock EP Promise & Hope with Queens County Roots (2024) and serves as the frontman of the Resurrection of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins Band.

With a style that moves fluidly from soulful acapella and blues tributes to hip-hop grit and indie rock fire, Shakar embodies Brooklyn versatility and authenticity, crafting a career that honors tradition while pushing creative boundaries.
