Muriel Grossmann Biography
Multi-instrumentalist and composer Muriel Grossmann has been hailed as modern music spiritual jazz Master and is responsible for some of the most musically evocative and emotionally resonant jazz
albums of the early 21st century. Grossmann, adept on alto, soprano, and tenor saxophones combines
spirited playing with compositions written specifically to showcase the strength of her collaborators. These works reflect the place where
post-Coltrane modalism meets spiritual post-bop and experimentalism dictating new realities with her playing and composing. The magic of her work can be heard on records such as Devotion released on Jack White's Third Man Records in 2023 and The Light Of the Mind from 2024 (RR Gems Records). Grossmann’s extensive recorded catalogue includes such classics as
Golden Rule, Reverence and Universal Code. Her strength cannot be contained within the realm of the
recording studio; it truly comes to life on stage, as it can be heard on her latest recording “MGQ live im
King Georg, Köln” (Power House Records).
Muriel Grossmann Quartet is delivering absolute fire, an explosive spiritual jazz led by Grossmann’s saxophones, who is joined by the burner duo of Radomir Milojkovic
and Abel Boquera, respectively on guitar and Hammond B3 organ, while
drummer Uros Stamenkovic keeps all this flammable material in the combustion chamber with his
rhythmical insulation.

Reviews of Muriel Grossmann’s latest albums: MGQ live im King Georg, Köln (2025), The Light of the Mind (2024) & Devotion (2023).
"(MGQ) creates a cosmos of sound that is as meditative as it is powerful … this live recording shows the quartet’s evolution towards an increasingly psychedelic, bluesy, proggy aesthetic …The joyful feel of the night plays out loud and clear, from this fabulous quartet of musicians through to the audience and onto the recording … her playing is incredible, lighting up the night with its luminosity.… Stunning musicianship all around, and a great live album to sit back and enjoy from one of the world’s leading lights in the spiritual jazz universe," Mike Gates, UKVibe, March 2025
“As if awakened from a winter slumber, Muriel Grossmann's jazz blossoms in the boldest colors: Informed by the psychedelic qualities of her predecessors (Coltrane, Sanders, Dorothy Ashby, perhaps even Bob James), the pieces on "The Light of the Mind" glow in wild orange and purple tones, with heat radiating from the pauses,” Lars Fleischmann, HHV Mag, 2024
“Muriel Grossmann's latest offering is a radiant journey into spiritual jazz, rich with groove and emotional resonance. Grossmann's work pulses
with warmth, community and profound beauty,” Juno Records, UK, 2024
“Muriel Grossmann's reputation as a leading practitioner of spiritual jazz that grooves, deeply grooves, has grown steadily with every new
recording. Grossmann's music has won devoted fans the world over. If, however, you are a new listener, you will find with this album that you
have come to a place where contemporary spiritual jazz meets happiness. Serious happiness,
” Rough Trade, UK, 2024
“A fantastic step forward for Muriel Grossmann – an artist who just keeps on expanding her talents at the same time she's expanding our minds!
Muriel delivers her familiar reed work here – on tenor, alto, and soprano sax – but she also brings deeper spiritual currents into play with sounds
on harp, tambura, and harmonium – all instruments that really match the modal, spiritual sounds that emanate from the guitar of Radomir
Milojkovic, drums of Uros Stamenkovic, and Hammond B3, Fender Rhodes, and moog of Abel Boquera!” Dusty Groove, Chicago, 2024
“Devotion encapsulates everything that is exhilarating about Muriel Grossmann’s already substantial oeuvre. Here all the restless sonic divination that has characterized much of her earlier work is brought back down to earth and channeled into the unstoppable groove. It is, after all, the people’s music,” Brent Sirota, Aquarium Drunkard, 2023
“Grossmann has released her unique brand of jazz music into the universal sonic ethers, and has, through her own vessel, carried the deeply eclectic spirit of some of the greatest jazz players of all time (Davis, Coltrane, Gordon, Redman, Liston Smith, Sun Ra, Sanders, Cherry, and the like), into the new millennium, without reserve, without conformity, and without shame,” TONE Scott, Goldmine Magazine, 2023
“In one breath, Muriel Grossman draws every bit of serenity her joyful sound has to give, while generating enough intensity to make it resonate
across the breadth of the planet. With a groove, a growl, or a sigh, the saxophonist’s music radiates everything good about life,” Dave Sumner, Bandcamp, 2023
