About this concert
This genre-blending concert celebrates innovation, rhythm, and drama. The Academy Orchestra performs an original work by composer Dana Graybeal, followed by David Balakrishnan’s Skylife—a jazz-infused showpiece featuring YAO alumna Aolani Aguirre on violin. Piazzolla’s fiery Libertango closes the first half with sultry Argentine flair. The YAO Symphony then joins forces with Opera Las Vegas for selections from Bizet’s Carmen, featuring music from the Carmen Suites Nos. 1 and 2 alongside iconic arias. Studio Artists Claudia Affan (soprano) and Aaron Oberlander (baritone) perform Micaëla’s Je dis que rien ne m’épouvante (“I say that nothing frightens me”) and Escamillo’s famous Toreador Song—Votre toast, je peux vous le rendre (“Here’s to the toast I’ll gladly return”). Orchestral highlights include the Prélude, Aragonaise, Habanera, and Danse Bohème—a vivid journey through one of opera’s most beloved scores.
