About this concert
Celebrate the darkest time of the year with an exquisite weave of atmospheric, seasonal music and winter words by Dylan Thomas, Laurie Lee, Charles Dickens, and more with Wintertide by Candlelight. We will illuminate the night with a glorious offering of music in the beautiful setting of William Shakespeare’s final resting place, Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon, which will be adorned with stars as part of the Escape Arts Stars of our Community art installation. From Holst’s Midwinter and Corelli’s Christmas Concerto to Vivaldi’s iconic ‘Winter’ from The Four Seasons, interwoven with some of the finest seasonal poetry and prose, narrated by the wonderfully witty Sunny Ormonde (best known as ‘Lilian’ from The Archers) perfectly setting the scene for Christmas. The winter solstice represents a symbolic dividing line; that moment at the year’s end where old gives way to new, despair transforms into hope and darkness becomes light. Wintertide will be produced by Hambletts Productions.

Orchestra Of The Swan Biography

Orchestra of the Swan is an innovative British chamber orchestra which, under the artistic direction of David Le Page, is known for its unconventional programming, groundbreaking concert films and willingness to blur the lines between musical genres. Its critically acclaimed mixtape albums - Timelapse, Labyrinths and Echoes - have gained more than 15 million streams worldwide and include imaginative new arrangements of music by David Bowie, The Smiths, Brian Eno, The Velvet Underground, Radiohead, Joy Division, Frank Zappa and A Winged Victory for the Sullen. The orchestra regularly works with artists from the worlds of folk, rock, jazz, tango and klezmer recognising that the traditional barriers between musical styles are increasingly irrelevant. Their next album Earthcycle highlights the issue of climate change and features a new version of The Four Seasons by Jazz/Baroque composer David Gordon and traditional folk songs performed by Jackie Oates.
