Secrets of the Dead is an opportunity for filmmakers to show an original short (1-20 minutes) about one of the more beguiling aspects of the human condition in front of an audience in New York City, where the Secrets series of film festivals has found a niche among informed cinephiles for over a decade.
Selected films will screen in Secrets of the Dead at Cinema Film Noir in Brooklyn (NYC), a converted funeral parlor, on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025 There may also be additional screenings.
In addition to showcasing films from all over the world, Secrets of the Dead has included (almost) live performances - music, thumbnail theater, literature, and (most horrifying of them all) poetry.
We are delighted to announce that our 2025 musical guests will be Frenchy and the Punk. https://frenchyandthepunk.com/bio
Frenchy and the Punk, the NY-based two-person powerhouse of sound, create their own distinct blend of post-punk, with elements of darkwave and goth rock with electro-acoustic hybrid guitars, loop pedals, fiery live acoustic and electronic percussion and synth. Performing in the alternative underground scene since 2005, they formed in New York City as more of a dark cabaret / folk punk act. After years of touring and fine tuning their sound, it has evolved into a distinctly authentic amalgamation of their divergent influences. Their relentless touring, which has amounted to nearly 1500 shows, has brought them around the US, Canada, Europe and West Africa.
French-born singer, keyboardist, percussionist, Samantha Stephenson, hails from a dance, music and art background having studied piano, ballet, modern and hip hop as well as sculpture. Guitarist Scott Helland comes from an entirely different background, the American Hardcore Punk scene of the 80’s. Helland was a founding member and bassist of the legendary hardcore band, Deep Wound that he formed with J Mascis and Lou Barlow, now of Dinosaur jr. Helland still joins his old band mates on bass from time to time at clubs and arenas around the world. He was also a member of Outpatients and NYC’s School of Violence throughout the 80’s and into the 90’s.
Drawing inspiration from post-punk legends like The Cure, the upbeat energy and percussive textures of Adam and the Ants, the bewitching mystique of Siouxsie and the Banshees, and the quirky charm of The B-52's, Frenchy and the Punk have crafted a sound that is both nostalgic and refreshing delivered in an unorthodox way. Together Samantha and Scott’s spellbinding stage presence and compelling delivery creates an infectious and mesmerizing wall of sound that pushes the boundaries of what two people can do, what Post-Punk.com calls “…a wonderful alchemy of complementary energies.”
Frenchy and the Punk have shared the stage with the likes of: Thomas Dolby, Aurelio Voltaire, Vision Video, Health, Dinosaur jr, Ego Likeness, Toyah Wilcox, Cruxshadows, Rosegarden Funeral Party, Rasputina and many more.
Frenchy and the Punk is planning new releases for 2025 to follow up their recent albums Midnight Garden (2024), and Zen Ghost (2022).

Frenchy and the Punk Biography
"An inspiriting slice of post-punk hued, new wave nurtured rock 'n roll" Ringmaster Review
Through their unmistakable blend of influences ranging from post-punk and dark folk to new wave and goth, Frenchy and the Punk have forged their own distinct path since 2005, touring across the US and Europe with their artful two-person powerhouse of sound.
Drawing inspiration from post-punk legends like The Cure, the upbeat energy and percussive textures of Adam and the Ants, the bewitching mystique of Siouxsie and the Banshees, and the quirky charm of The B-52's, they have crafted a sound that is both nostalgic and refreshingly authentic delivered in an unorthodox way.
The pair is proof positive that opposites really do attract. French-born singer/percussionist and former ballet dancer Samantha Stephenson, fronts the duo with her sultry yet powerful voice, often likened to iconic legends Siouxsie Sioux, Johnette Napolitano and Grace Slick. Coupled with the melodic electro/acoustic guitar stylings and looping mastery of her American-born partner and former hardcore punk bassist Scott Helland, the dynamic partnership is a force to be reckoned with. A real life love story against the backdrop of an unwavering dedication to the art of music and creativity as a lifestyle and personal journey.
"It is easy to see where some of Frenchy and the Punk’s influences lie – somewhere in a swirl of gothic and post-punk pioneers of the early eighties and perhaps Siouxsie and the Banshees in particular. There are also the echoes of one of my favorite bands hanging over the music, Concrete Blonde; the same shamanic sound, the same blend of the sultry and the sensational, of rock moves and voodoo grooves."
