About this concert
The Black Artists Rock series celebrates the rich contributions of Black Texas artists in the rock, singer/songwriter, and folk genres. Emerging and established musicians come together to blend the raw energy of rock with the storytelling essence of folk, and shine a light on the roots, truth, and soul behind their music. Each show in the second annual Black Artists Rock series will feature a local Black artist hosted by program founder Scott Strickland. The artists will tell the stories behind their songs, speak to their experiences as Black artists in the rock, singer/songwriter, and/or folk genres, and share their music in an intimate listening room environment. Pershing Hall’s extensive menu of craft cocktails and late-night bites, highlighted by locally sourced spirits, beer, and ingredients, arguably presents one of the most well-rounded food and live entertainment experiences available in Austin. Impact In Austin, Texas, a city renowned for its music, the Black Artist Rock series stands out by providing a platform for artists who have historically been underrepresented in the rock and folk genres. In addition to amplifying the voices of these artists and recognizing their cultural contributions, a portion of food & beverage sales from each concert support Austin Texas Musicians, a local nonprofit committed to elevating industry conditions for musicians and empowering professional musicians to lend their voice for change. This event series would not be possible without the generous support of H-E-B.

Scott Strickland Biography

“It might be the best video, and song, to come out of Austin in the first half of 2022”, Peter Blackstock wrote as he praised the opening track of Scott’s debut album “L.A.” writing for one of the only two print newspapers in the “Live Music Capital of the World”. Hailing from Houston, TX, by way of Nacogdoches, TX, the accidental musician Scott Strickland now calls Austin his home after residing in the great state’s capital for more than 9 years.

After transitions from retail to teaching filmmaking at three colleges from Waco to San Antonio, Scott found himself laid off as a result of the pandemic. He used this moment as an opportunity, forcing himself to get extremely creative with how he pursued this second lease on life, music, and his newly-found relationship with God. A season of hard-fledged, messy introspection led Scott to chase the kind of music that connects truth, music, and the soul in the kind of way that can only be raw, honest, and vulnerable. Not pretending. Not accusing. As a result, he stripped down his Rock/Pop sound and regrounded the arrangement with a more folk-centered approach, getting back to basics with lush string arrangements to compliment his bright, colorful, and airy sound.

Now, having collaborated with some of the greatest artists in Austin in one of the greatest spaces in the city, Scott is very proud to announce his most ambitious project yet - Strings Attached: The 1500 Sessions.
