What began as a free-form studio experiment between Dave Alvin and Victor Krummenacher
(Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker, Monks of Doom), inspired by the spontaneity of
Miles Davis’ improvisational work, The Third Mind morphed into a supergroup enlisting guitarist
David Immerglück (Counting Crows, John Hiatt, Monks of Doom),
drummer Michael Jerome (Richard Thompson, Better Than Ezra, John Cale), and
singer/songwriter Jesse Sykes (Jesse Sykes & The Sweeter Hereafter), whose mesmerizing
vocal presence Alvin credits as the band’s anchor. “To me, Jesse’s vocals are the glue that holds this whole thing together,” says Alvin. “Her voice is so unique, and she sings with such intense introspection that it just sucks you in.”
LIVE - The Third Mind present their psychedelic improv performances with
the addition of guitarist Mark Karan (Bob Weir's Ratdog, Phil Lesh,
Delaney Bramlett) in place of Immerglück.
Hailed as a “must-see” performance by the San Francisco Chronicle after The Third Mind’s live debut performance at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass’ 2023 festival in San Francisco’s legendary Golden Gate Park, where CBS News Bay Area proclaimed the show “a spectacular performance.” The now legendary 10-date West Coast tour that followed garnered rave reviews including Twangville who noted, “if you want to experience a set of musicians at the top of their game improvising down a psychedelic rabbit hole, go catch The Third Mind.”

Kind of an old school jam band improv evening. Nice to see Dave Alvin go in a completely different direction than two months ago with Jimmie Dale Gilmore at the Ark in Ann Arbor. He's a fine guitarist and it's fun to see him show off a bit. Good times.

Starting four years ago as a wishful music fantasy, this California based Supergroup, The Third Mind, has now become a powerful and thrilling sonic reality.
The brainchild of Grammy winning songwriter/guitarist Dave Alvin and veteran alternative music bassist Victor Krummenacher, (Camper Van Beethoven, Monks of Doom, Eyelids),The Third Mind's recordings also feature guitarist David Immerglück, (Counting Crows, Monks of Doom, Camper Van Beethoven), drummer Michael Jerome, (Richard Thompson, Better Than Ezra, John Cale) and vocalist Jesse Sykes from her critically acclaimed group, Jesse Sykes And The Sweet Hereeafter.
Featured in festival previews as a must-see from the San Francisco Chronicle to CBS News, The Third Mind made their live debut performance at the 2023 Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco’s legendary Golden Gate Park. Adding guest guitarist Mark Karan (Bob Weir's Ratdog, Phil Lesh, Delaney Bramlett) and keyboardist Willie Aaron (Leonard Cohen, Van Dyke Parks), and combining folk-rock, blues, jazz, post-punk, and freeform psychedelia with dark, moody yet hopeful and beautiful sonic landscapes, the “neo-psychedelic” (Press Democrat) band used their decades of experience as bandleaders and side-persons, playing both traditional and non-traditional music to mesmerize a crowd estimated at 4,000.
