About this concert
Thrilled to welcome Charles Latham and the Borrowed Band back to Gas Hill Drinking Room on September 13, 2025, with special guests Professor Twang and the Honky Tonk Review! Doors at 7 PM, show at 8 PM. Tickets are on sale NOW at TheRamkat.com! Charles Latham wields an acid tongue and a poison pen, crafting social criticism, tragicomic narratives, and brutal self-analysis into ramshackle country-rock songs. After a decade of wandering, from Philadelphia to Nashville to Memphis to the U.K., singer-songwriter Charles Latham returned to North Carolina in late 2014, laying roots down in Durham. His 2017 LP, "Little Me Time", found Latham combining his acerbic wit and quirky songwriting with more polished production values and an expansive sound. In order to bring the songs to life for live audiences, he recruited an ensemble of local talent, now known as The Borrowed Band. Since then, the Borrowed Band's fluid line-up has solidified into a core group of musicians, forged into a spectacularly energetic and dynamic live band through the alchemy of constant gigging: drummer "Steamboat" Steve Anderson (Kamara Thomas) and bassist Robert Sledge (Ben Folds Five) providing the foundation from which lead guitarist Luis Rodriguez (6 String Drag) and Gordon Hartin's (Shooter Jennings) pedal steel launch their fireworks. On vocals and rhythm guitar, Latham is joined by Abby Sheriff, creating a vocal blend that recalls Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. Charles Latham and the Borrowed Band's 2020 self-titled LP is a celebration of the new sound they have forged together, which marries Latham's idiosyncratic songwriting style with vintage, psychedelic country-rock. 2023 saw the release of two singles with accompanying videos, “Love Hurts” and “Last Great Never Was.” Professor Twang and the Honky Tonk Review is what happens when three college professors, a music librarian, a public school teacher, and one fearless drummer walk into a bar—and start a honky tonk band. Based somewhere between Greensboro, Graham, and Durham (basically wherever I-85 and I-40 gets confusing), they serve up classic country favorites and rowdy originals with brains, boots, and a whole lot of twang. Equal parts sawdust and syllabus, this is honky tonk with a GPA. The band formed in true serendipitous style when Dr. Mark Dillon (accordion/guitar/keyboard/vocals) exclaimed to fellow musician and UNC Greensboro colleague Billie Feather (banjo/guitar/bass/vocals), “Hey! The new head music librarian is a pedal steel player—and I know a killer Telecaster player!” Billie replied, “Well, my friend William just moved back to North Carolina from Houston!” Zac Lassiter came along for the ride and just like that, a honky tonk band was born.

Charles Latham Biography

"Latham's music is passionate with biting wit." --NPR

"Reminiscent of the glorious sloppiness of Neil Young & Crazy Horse." - Folk Radio UK

"One of the sharpest songwriters to emerge of late on the antifolk sphere...Charles Latham could be your new hero." - INDY Weekly

Charles Latham is a singular voice in the North Carolina music scene — a bold and imaginative songwriter whose sharp wit, emotional depth, and magnetic performances have earned him comparisons to legends like Bob Dylan, John Prine, and Robyn Hitchcock.

After years of crisscrossing the U.S. and U.K., Latham put down roots in Durham, NC, in 2014. His 2017 album, Little Me Time, highlighted his talent for pairing razor-sharp lyrics with compelling melodies and expansive production. To bring his songs to life on stage, Latham formed The Borrowed Band, an ensemble of some of the region’s most respected musicians, including former members of Ben Folds Five, Shooter Jennings, and 6 String Drag. Together, they deliver a captivating blend of ballads and barnstormers, drawing on the chemistry of vintage duets like Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris while adding a modern twist.
