From Terrigal’s coastal calm to Sydney’s vibrant creative scene, BOY SODA has become one of Australia’s most exciting voices in Soul and R&B. Since breaking out with his mixtape YC-TAPE: Vol. 1 and debut EP The Distance Between Thinking and Feeling, he’s carved out his own lane, blending raw emotion with genre-defying sound.
From supporting Dominic Fike (US), Kofi Stone (UK), Seth Sentry, and Sycco, to standout performances at SXSW Sydney, BIGSOUND, triple J's Bars of Steel, and Hermes, BOY SODA is gaining serious love from triple j, CADA, VICE, Rolling Stone, and more.
Now, in 2025, BOY SODA is finally ready to drop his debut album, SOULSTAR — a bold and immersive introduction to an artist redefining Australia’s Soul and R&B landscape. Crafted in the Blue Mountains with a live ensemble of musicians and close collaborators, the record fuses rich instrumentation, soulful vocals, and introspective lyricism into a body of work that feels both intimate and expansive. As the tide in Australian music culture shifts, a collective of emerging local artists are shaping a contemporary sound on our shores. Central Coast bred, Australian-Samoan, Eora-based artist BOY SODA is an undisputed leader in this new school of thought, utilising R&B and intricately crafted pop music to captivate his swiftly growing audience. BOY SODA - aka Brae Luafalealo - has been on the rise since being picked by Converse to travel to the United States in 2019, where he opened for Dominic Fike at the Converse x Camp Flog Gnaw brand event in Los Angeles.
Boasting a diversity of sounds that is truly rare among up-and-coming artists, BOY SODA has made waves in the music world with his impressive repertoire. Kicking 2022 off with a bang, BOY SODA shared his debut EP 'THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THINKING AND FEELING’ home to the acclaimed single 'BIG' which was featured on the global hit Netflix series Heartbreak High - but he didn't stop there. Shifting gears to collaborate with Taka Perry on the high-energy single 'LEMONADE', which quickly made it onto rotation on triple j, BOY SODA took a career-changing writing trip to London, honing in on his newly found inspiration; the catalyst for his monumental debut mixtape was born, 'YC-TAPES: VOL.1'. Breaking the mold of traditional releases, BOY SODA drip-fed the mixtape advent calendar style over the month of December, introducing us to soulful bass-driven jams and traditional pop-infused R&B cuts across its prolific tracklist, glued seamlessly together by his evocative lyrical excellence.
The last couple years have seen BOY SODA open for Seth Sentry on his national tour, performing at the Hoops Capital x Sydney Kings game at Qudos Bank Arena, continuing his relationship with Converse by participating in multiple All-Star Series events, songwriting camps, and the Spring/Summer ’23 global marketing campaign. Most recently, he’s embarked on a trip to New Zealand for APRA AMCOS’ Songhubs and has showcased his impressive live act at BIGSOUND 2022 and SXSW Sydney 2023.
