About this concert
The Music of The Secret Path with Special Guests In support of the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund Fri, Oct 10, 2025 | 7:30pm Main Theatre Reg: $37.50 – $57.50 Mem $32.50 – $52.50 A musical sharing of The Secret Path, a Canadian multimedia storytelling project created by The Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie and friends to promote awareness, education and thoughtful reconciliation. This concert will include local musical contributors and national artists. Gord Downie began Secret Path as ten poems incited by the story of Chanie Wenjack, a twelve year-old boy who died on October 22, 1966, in flight from the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School near Kenora, Ontario, walking home to the family he was taken from over 400 miles away. Gord was introduced to Chanie Wenjack (miscalled “Charlie” by his teachers) by Mike Downie, his brother, who shared with him Ian Adams’ Maclean’s story from February 6, 1967, “The Lonely Death of Charlie Wenjack.” The stories Gord’s poems tell were fleshed into the ten songs of Secret Path with producers Kevin Drew and Dave Hamelin. Recording took place over two sessions at the Bathouse in Bath, Ontario, November and December 2013. The music features Downie on vocals and guitars, with Drew and Hamelin playing all other instruments, except guest contributions by Charles Spearin (bass), Ohad Benchetrit (lap steel/guitar), Kevin Hearn (piano), and Dave “Billy Ray” Koster (drums). Joe Lapinski Biography

A veteran of the Canadian music scene, Joe Lapinski is a songwriter, performer, producer, and sound designer. Alongside his solo work, he collaborates with acts such as Minuscule, The Woodshed Orchestra, and Rita & The Daydreamers. He also runs WOW! Recording Studio & Creative Music Space in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Joe Lapinski’s upcoming album, New Day (due June 2025), co-produced with Dave Clark, explores themes of personal identity, community, love, trauma, and family. “Hurt A Bird” serves as the lead single, offering a gripping introduction to the album’s bold and heartfelt sound.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING:

"Once again, Joe Lapinski delivers just the right amount of musical mayhem to draw you into his web. With joyous singing and playing, he is truly letting go and going for it with his new album, New Day. This music feels like liberation. Just the push we all could use. Plus, the best song endings, ever.”
~ Laurie Brown, former host on “The Signal” (CBC), MuchMusic, “Pondercast”

""New Day” by singer-songwriter Joe Lapinski is a sunny slice of Canadiana that leans into the poppy side of folk and rock. The carefully considered songs keep things light and breezy, yet somehow the record still rocks, with a feel-good bastion of positive vibes and soaring harmonies. Joe has assembled an incredible cast of players for this most recent collection of his songs, and the sum of the parts shines brilliantly.

The first single, "Hurt A Bird’"cruises along with a smooth and buoyant jangle-pop feel, both catchy and heartfelt.

Among the many other standouts is ‘I Know This,’ a driving, noisy and visceral song that recalls some of the best elements of 90’s alt-rock.
Musically, the production, engineering and instrumentation alongside collaborator Dave Clark is also a remarkable calling card for their work in the studio; it simply sounds great. I give this record two elbows up! "
~ Tony Dekker (Great Lake Swimmers)
