About this concert
“Barbara are wonderful. I love their songs and their humour. We need more Barbara in our lives!” - Chris Difford “Barbara are one of the best groups about. Live they’re great, and their songs too. Clever and melodic. The Babs are fab!” - Paul Weller Taking their lead musically from an eclectic set of influences that range from Glam Pop to Broadway, Barbara make classic, irresistible pop music with a literary and intellectual approach. Whilst the influence on the music is noticeably American, Barbara’s lyrics are quintessentially British, infused with the inquisitive, satirical spirit of Harold Pinter, George Orwell and Ray Davies. In 2022, Barbara were handpicked by Neil Hannon to support The Divine Comedy on their UK tour, and a year later they played fourteen shows in support of Haircut One Hundred. In spring 2024, Barbara appeared as special guests of Paul Weller on his UK tour who again, handpicked them to perform. For fans of The Kinks, The Lemon Twigs, Electric Light Orchestra and The Feeling. “They are so up my street ... really tight songwriting, very poptastic!” - Neil Hannon "This band is nothing like anything I've ever heard and I love them!" - Steve Lillywhite "Barbara are an insanely talented band with an innate sense of melody and arrangement ... The ambitious scope and toe tapping immediacy of their sound belies their tender years." - Phill Jupitus

Barbara Biography

As if found in a dusty crate of vinyl reserved for true progressive pop pioneers, Barbara (brothers Henry and John Tydeman) appears in your life unannounced, out of nowhere, bursting with colour, and all of a sudden they’re your new favourite band…

Stylistically, the brothers inhabit a great jungle of influences: sweet smooth sounds of US AM radio, the whimsical variety of English Music Hall, effortlessly catchy Broadway show tunes, and the glitz of sequinned power pop, all the while
marinating in luscious golden harmonies that sound freshly shipped from late ‘60s California.

Their lyrics, though, are unquestionably British. Infused with the inquisitive, satirical spirit of Harold Pinter, George Orwell and Ray Davies, they consider these fractious political times, address the technological revolution we’re living through, and tell unsettling tales reminiscent of their childhood hero, Roald Dahl.
