I saw Joelton Mayfield and his band for the first time recently. They are incredible. His vocals are powerful and wide-ranging, with thoughtful, moving, sometimes funny lyrics that fit into gorgeous melodies. The band is a wonder, moving through dynamic shifts, long instrumental passages that never feel self-indulgent, but rather compelling and captivating. They manage to do all these things while still being a coherent whole. 5/5 stars, would see again.

Joelton Mayfield Biography
Crowd Pleaser, the stunning debut album from Texas-raised, Nashville-based songwriter Joelton Mayfield, is the result of nearly a decade of work and reflection. Written and recorded in the wake of personal heartbreak and years of questioning faith, the album captures Mayfield's journey from small-town Texas church music director to an emerging voice in indie rock and alt-country. Tracked over three weeks in a converted barn near Alabama's Mobile Bay, Crowd Pleaser brings together a patchwork of trusted friends and collaborators, with songs that lean into the raw edges of disappointment, doubt, and self-discovery.
Across ten tracks, Mayfield draws from the tradition of incisive Southern storytellers and country-rock bands unafraid to push boundaries. His songs wrestle with the hypocrisies of his upbringing, the unraveling of old beliefs, and unexpected moments of clarity. From the layered apocalyptic energy of album opener "Red Beam" to the quietly devastating hymn "Jacob Dreamed a Staircase," Crowd Pleaser introduces Joelton Mayfield as a songwriter unafraid to confront the most difficult lessons he's learned in his life and turn them into these songs meant to be shared like communion.
