About this concert
YOU wanted it!!! YOU asked for it!!! Now YOU have got it!
GET READY for MERRY HELLOWEEN!!!
That’s right, your eyes are not deceiving you! Like a good (bad?) vampire, werewolf or zombie mysteriously back from the dead, on Saturday 25th October, everyone’s favourite folk rock band MERRY HELL returns to St Helens’ best loved music venue The Citadel with a revival of their annual Merry Helloween show. Expect devilishly good songs, spooktacular musicianship, and singing so good it’ll send a shiver down your spine. Throw into the mix copious amounts of dancing and audience participation, and you’ve got yourself an experience that’ll haunt you (in a good way) all the way through to at least Christmas!
Merry Hell have made a name for themselves in recent years as one of the most energetic and entertaining bands on the UK folk festival circuit, with seven (count them) critically acclaimed albums under their belts (plus a chartbusting compilation double CD!!).
Founded on the ever-evolving folk tradition – music made by the people and shared by the people - though their hearts and souls are tuned to the songs which came before, Merry Hell bring us new words and music forged from their own experiences, from the lows and the loves of their lives.
Emerging from the ashes of festival favourites, punk folk band Tansads, Merry Hell retains a nucleus of brothers John, Bob and Andrew Kettle (guitar, mandolin and vocals respectively), along with keyboard player Lee Goulding and drummer Andy Jones, and the addition of keys and vocalist Virginia Kettle has helped create a new identity, purpose and spirit, in their music.
The great thing about The Citadel (the first place Merry Hell ever played - it couldn't have been anywhere else) is that you have a choice of standing - or reserving a seat = you can be iupstairs or downstairs!!
This show is standing in the stalls - although when we say standing, what we really mean is dancing! There’s reserved seating in the circle for those who wish to rattle their jewellery in good old Beatles fashion. So come on, what are you waiting for? Grab your tickets now before they sell out!

Merry Hell Biography
Multi-award winning Merry Hell offer joyful, uplifting folk-rock, with a message of hope for troubled times. Native to the North-West of England, the 8-piece musical charabanc emerged from the embers of the much-loved folk-punk band The Tansads, before developing a life and feel all of its own. Their energy and passion is complemented by their love of what they do and desire to share hope and togetherness with as many people as possible. Through 6 well-received albums and hundreds of gigs, they’ve offered voices of hope and beacons of light to anyone valuing both melody and positive humanity. Their live appearances have won many admirers, a recent review referred to 'every performance a celebration' and they are currently holders of Folking.com's Best Live Band Award and The Blues and Roots Radio ‘Album of the Year’ Award. The group performs as either a full electric 8-piece or a slimmed down, more acoustic 6-piece but offer all the songs, all the spirit and all the energy. Emergency Lullabies, gained wonderful reviews, significant airplay and a place in the UK Official Folk Chart, with the 2021 single When We Meet Again hitting No.8 in the USA Folk Radio charts – the compilation double CD Let The Music Speak for itself hit the Official Folk Charts Top 10 and an Amazon No.1 Folk CD - all confirming that this is a band on the rise! The band added fiddle player Simon Swarbrick to the line up, nephew of the Fairport Convention legend Dave Swarbrick – completing a circle as Swarb contributed a fiddle part to a track on Merry Hell’s second album. A new album awaits in 2024!
