About this concert
Two-time Grammy Award winner Kurt Elling brings his one-of-a-kind beat lyricism and vocalese-writing ingenuity to Strathmore, along with a big band made up of musicians from the DMV. Called “the standout male jazz vocalist of our time” by the New York Times, the Chicago-based musician has expanded the parameters of vocal jazz. Over a 25-year career of touring and recording, Elling has won three Prix du Jazz Vocal (France), two German Echo Awards, two Dutch Edison Awards, and has been nominated for a Grammy Award sixteen times. His fantastic work has only grown more ambitious and experimental with the passing of time, including his stunning new LP, SuperBlue: The Iridescent Spree.
Elling’s work with other leading figures in the jazz world has included important collaborations with Branford Marsalis, Danilo Perez, Fred Hersch, Charlie Hunter and Stefon Harris. He has also performed as a featured soloist with many of the world’s leading large ensembles, including the NY Philharmonic, The BBC Concert Symphony, The Count Basie Orchestra, The WDR Big Band and Orchestra, The Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra, and The Village Vanguard Orchestra.

Incredible voice and sound!
One of the best concert I’ve ever attended over the recent 70 years as a fan of cool jazz.
Have followed KE for over 30 years and consider him the best voice ever with Johnny Hartman second, even beating out jazz groups like LHR or a sound like Coltranes
Elling’s voice never gets tiresome. Listen all day/night..
Weither Roport was h just amazing.; still in top form as they have been over the last 47 years.Glad I’m still here.
I wish only that Mr Elling had gone into one or two of his standards.

Kurt Elling Biography
GRAMMY® Award-winner Kurt Elling is without question today’s preeminent male jazz vocalist, renowned worldwide for his unparalleled virtuosity and flair for trailblazing artistic exploration. From his stunning reinvention of timeless standards to his own captivating original songcraft, the Chicago-based musician has fused his dazzling talents across a panoply of musical approaches, emblazoning each with signature imagination, insight, and emotional intelligence.
Where many male jazz vocalists at this stage in a much vaunted career have tended to stick to the tried and true, Elling seems to be growing more ambitious and experimental with the passing of time, a tendency evidenced by his stunning new LP, SuperBlue: The Iridescent Spree. The followup to 2021’s remarkable SuperBlue, the album once again sees Elling joining forces with producer/guitarist Charlie Hunter and multi-instrumentalist duo drummer Corey Fonville and bassist-keyboardist DJ Harrison for a kaleidoscopic collection of new songs, surprising covers, and dynamic reinventions.
