Free Sax Biography
Formed in San Francisco, California in 2009, Free Sax is a free-jazz trio consisting of Aaron Saul on Alto sax, Andrew Ferren on Tenor sax, and Brian Rodvien on Drums. Their focus is collaborative, spontaneous, dynamic improvisation, with the intent to remain as free of set rhythms and melodies as possible, and to fully explore the sonic landscapes that can be shaped with 3 acoustic instruments, creating newly-found universes of sound and rhythm. We began with the Buddhist concept of non-attachment in regards to our spontaneous musical ideas and phrases. What resulted was surprising! We were able to listen much more intently to each other, delving far deeper into our musical faculties without feeling like we had to play in the same key or even the same tempo or time signature. The music created feels transcendent, in a stream-of-consciousness style, with smooth transitions between ideas. In this process we create instantaneous songs, informed by our study and love of various genres, including Jazz, Dub, Experimental, Hip-Hop, Baroque, Classical and Rock. As we close our eyes and play, we open windows into the past and future, a term we lovingly call "star-gating". Our quest is to play totally and freely from our hearts and souls, while applying the techniques and experiences of decades of professional performance.
