(the mystery of) Kem by Stéphane Galland is based on specific research on new rhythmical aspects.

Kem, in ancient Epypt, means the color Black, like the limon of the Nile, the black earth, fertile. An extremely positive word for a color, often seen as negative, or “evil”. It is in that symbolic earth that “(the mystery of) Kem” grows new rhythmical aspects whose schemes, “dances” and improvisations take roots in the Yin and Yang complementarity of rhythmical pulses (even/uneven).

For this journey, Stephane Galland is surrounded by the most daring and talented young Belgian musicians: Sylvain Debaisieux (sax), Bram De Looze (piano) and Federico Stocchi (bass). And invites regularly one of the most prominent Carnatic Flute player in the world from South India, Ravi Kulur (Ravi Shakar, Anoushka Shankar,…)

Stephane Galland was recently touring with Ibrahim Maalouf “Red & Black Light” project, and this year, is celebrating 25 years of concerts and more than 20 albums with the band Aka Moon. He has been the leader of a unique gathering of some of the best musicians from their respective traditions (Balkan, Flamenco, Turkish, Armenian, African) in his previous project “LOBI”, considered by the French specialized press as a “masterly example of what World Jazz should be”, and got some of the highest awards by jazz critics in Jazz Magazine, Jazz News, Le Soir, and many other. Multicultural encounters and the enrichment of his own musical language and skills, have always been Stephane Galland’s major source of motivation. With “(the mystery of) Kem”, he visits the rhythmical roots where all the musical traditions that he has rubbed together and integrated into his own language converge and explores a specific space that allows the integration of all these concepts without a priori or stylistic limitation.

In het oude Egypte duidt Kem op de kleur zwart en verwijst het naar de donkere en vruchtbare aarde. Stéphane Galland omringt zich met jonge, talentvolle en avontuurlijke Belgische muzikanten en laat zich bijstaan door de uit het zuiden van India afkomstige Ravi Kulur, een van de meest prominente hedendaagse carnatische fluitisten. Samen exploreren ze nieuwe ritmische invalshoeken.
Stéphane Galland stelt de ontmoeting tussen culturen en de verrijking van de muzikale en de ritmische taal centraal in zijn samenwerkingen met Ibrahim Maalouf, Aka Moon of in Lobi. Met (the mystery of) Kem exploreert de drummer de wortels van het ritme op het kruispunt van alle muzikale tradities die hij leerde kennen en integreerde in zijn eigen muzikale taal.

(the mystery of) Kem de Stéphane Galland est le fruit d’une recherche spécifique sur de nouveaux aspects rythmiques.

Kem désigne la couleur noire en Egypte ancienne, symbolisant le limon du Nil, la terre noire fertile. Un terme extrêmement positif pour une couleur souvent associée aux aspects négatifs, « diaboliques ». C’est dans cette terre symbolique que « (the mystery of) Kem » cultive de nouveaux aspects rythmiques dont les schémas, leurs « danses » et les improvisations qui en découlent prennent leurs racines dans la complémentarité Yin/Yang des pulsations rythmiques (pair/impair).

Stéphane Galland s’entoure, pour cette exploration, d’aventuriers musicaux les plus téméraires et talentueux de la jeune génération Belge : Sylvain Debaisieux au saxophone, Bram De Looze au piano et Federico Stocchi à la contrebasse. Et pour cette première mondiale au théâtre Marni, ils seront rejoints par un des plus grands flûtistes carnatiques actuels, Ravi Kulur (Ravi Shankar, Anouschka Shankar, …), pour enrichir cette terre noire d’une des traditions rythmiques les plus sophistiquées au monde en provenance de l’Inde du sud.

Que ce soit avec Ibrahim Maalouf, lors de sa plus récente tournée « Red & Black Light », ou avec Aka Moon qui célèbre cette année ses 25 ans d’existence et plus de 20 albums, ou encore avec son précédent projet personnel « Lobi », les rencontres multiculturelles, l’enrichissement du langage musical et rythmique en particulier, sont toujours restées la source majeure de motivation de Stéphane Galland. Avec (the mystery of) Kem, il visite les racines rythmiques où convergent toutes les traditions musicales qu’il a pu côtoyé et intégré dans son propre langage, et explore un espace particulier qui permet l’intégration de tous ces concepts, sans à priori ni limitation stylistique.
