About this concert
Join us for an exclusive music video premiere from PDX post-punk outfit, Nyx Division, for their upcoming new single "Soldier of Love" followed by the classic Michael Radford film '1984'.
Eerily clairvoyant when originally published in 1949 and uncanny in its cinema adaptation released during the wretched depths of the Reagan years, Michael Radford’s ‘1984’ returns to the Clinton Street Theater at yet another politically poignant apex of cruelty and control. Join us in advance of this screening for an exclusive music video premiere from PDX post-punk outfit, Nyx Division, for their upcoming new single: Soldier of Love.
George Orwell’s classic novel has maintained unfortunate salience despite the 76 years that have lapsed since its original release, as has Radford’s bleak, silver screen adaptation. In a world all too closely mirrored in our own, a surveillance state haunts its citizens; crushing dissent with an iron fist, criminalizing pleasure, deifying fascism, and accepting no less from its citizens than soul-crushing conformity.
While communicated in the medium of music, and much more colorful in its aesthetic, Nyx Division’s ‘Soldier of Love’ (directed by Olivia Bayer) explores complimentary themes of surveillance, loss of self, a life led by fear in response to domestic violence and abuse– but most importantly, how to keep your heart alive in the face of it all.
Both divergent and complimentary in medium and decades apart in their respective creative arrivals, ‘1984’ and ‘Soldier of Love’ both pose the questions: Who are we without love? What does life, humanity, and the world become without it?
As the defiant Winston Smith (expertly played by John Hurt) says of survival, “It’s not so much staying alive as staying human that’s important.”
When totalitarian domination parades itself as purity, corruption becomes the sole path toward liberation. An enemy of the state is a lover among the liberated world– a soldier of love.
So for those who dare to love in the face of ruthless domination, for those who remain “corrupt to the core”, join us at:
