About this concert
GRAMMY® & IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Award Winners Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley have been referred to as "two of the finest musicians playing today" by No Depression, “bluegrass aces” by Rolling Stone, "an acoustic firestorm" by Vintage Guitar, ”dual lightning strikes in a bottle" by Guitar Player, and "the Swiss Army Knife of roots music" by WMOT Radio's Craig Havighurst. Ickes is the most decorated musician in IBMA history as a 15-time IBMA Resophonic Guitar Player of the Year and co-founder of the bluegrass supergroup Blue Highway. Hensley is the 2023 IBMA Guitar Player of the Year is a guitar prodigy called “Nashville’s hottest young player” by Acoustic Guitar. Together, Rob & Trey are a powerhouse acoustic duo who have electrified crowds all over the world. Recipients of multiple GRAMMY® Award nominations, Ickes and Hensley both became GRAMMY® Award winners for the first time on Feb. 2, 2025 at The 67th Annual GRAMMY® Awards in Los Angeles as members of The Taj Mahal Sextet—winners of the GRAMMY® Award for Best Traditional Blues Album, Swingin’ Live At The Church In Tulsa. Noted for their guitar prowess (Ickes & Hensley were invited to perform at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival 2023 in Los Angeles alongside some of the world's greatest guitarists), white-hot picking (as Acoustic Guitar puts it: "hot-shot guitar picking...steel-string bluegrass with all the intensity of rock 'n' roll"), world class musicianship, soulful stone country vocals and top-shelf songwriting, Rob & Trey cleverly meld bluegrass, country, blues, rock, jam grass, and more to create a genre-defying signature musical blend. The duo has received high praise from legends like the late, great Merle Haggard ("I'm sure I don't make a true 'critic' since I'm already such a fan, but this album from Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley is a wonderful piece of work. And my songwriting side is truly overwhelmed. Thank you, thank you, thank you.") and Marty Stuart ("In this ever-changing world of Country Music, it's comforting to know that the real deal still exists.") Rob & Trey have been influenced by repertoires as diverse as the Allman Brothers Band, Buck Owens, Ray Charles, Stevie Ray Vaughan, George Jones and The Band. Given that, it's no wonder that the dynamic duo's list of collaborators is equally as eclectic: Vince Gill, Taj Mahal, Tommy Emmanuel, Earl Scruggs, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Little Feat, Marty Stuart, Steve Wariner, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Leftover Salmon, Steve Vai, Rodney Crowell, Molly Tuttle, David Grisman, Jorma Kaukonen, and Hot Tuna, among many others. Ickes, a native of the San Francisco Bay Area is a highly sought-after Dobro master who has recorded or performed live with artists such as Alison Krauss, Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire, Merle Haggard, Earl Scruggs, Tony Rice and many more. Ickes was a key member of Willie Nelson's all-star band for the GRAMMY®-nominated 2023 Willie Nelson album, Bluegrass. Hensley, a native of Johnson City, Tennessee, made his Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 11, performing with Marty Stuart and Earl Scruggs (thanks to an invite from Stuart), and has since appeared on stage with the likes of Johnny Cash, Peter Frampton, Charlie Daniels, Old Crow Medicine Show and Stone Temple Pilots. Hensley was chosen to perform in December 2022 as part of special 2-night-only engagement with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and many special guests celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Will The Circle Be Unbroken at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville. Rob & Trey's latest critically acclaimed, song-centric album, Living In A Song—produced by GRAMMY® Award-winning producer/engineer/songwriter Brent Maher (The Judds, Elvis Presley, Merle Haggard, Kenny Rogers, Tina Turner)—was a Top 5 Bluegrass album, Top 10 Americana album and Top 40 Current Country album. Ickes & Hensley earned a GRAMMY® Award nomination for their debut album, Before The Sun Goes Down. Rob and Trey are frequent performers on the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, where their performances can be heard worldwide on Music City's landmark radio station, WSM-AM. Their reach nationwide is vast via television with appearances and performances on PBS' award-winning David Holt's State of Music; RFD's Emmy-nominated TV series, My Bluegrass Story (they each had their own episode), PBS’ WoodSongs and Circle All Access’ Opry Live and radio: NPR’s Mountain Stage and WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour (on nearly 550 radio stations around the world).

Rob and Trey knocked it out of the park! And the Bluebird is an excellent venue, very small and intimate setting. Not a bad seat in the house.

Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley Biography

Take a 15-time IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Resophonic Guitar Player of the Year and a Tennessee-born guitar prodigy called “Nashville's hottest young player” by Acoustic Guitar magazine, and you have Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley, a powerhouse acoustic duo that has electrified the acoustic music scene around the world. Known for their white-hot picking and world class musicianship, as well as their soulful stone country vocals, the GRAMMY®-nominated duo cleverly and uniquely melds bluegrass, country, blues, rock, jamgrass, and string band music of all kinds to create a signature blend of music that defies restrictions of genre. NPR has called Ickes and Hensley "two musical phenoms"; Vintage Guitar raved they're an "acoustic firestorm" who "are changing the rules"; Acoustic Guitar describes their sound as "steel-string bluegrass with all the intensity of rock 'n' roll" and No Depression observed they're "two of the finest musicians playing today." Ickes and Hensley have shared the stage or collaborated with Tommy Emmanuel, Taj Mahal, Vince Gill, David Grisman, Jorma Kaukonen, Marty Stuart, and Steve Wariner—all admirers of the duo. Ickes, former founding member of bluegrass "supergroup" Blue Highway and highly sought-after Dobro master, has graced the recordings and concerts of artists such as Earl Scruggs, Merle Haggard, Alison Krauss, Tony Rice and more. Hensley, who earned his first IBMA Guitar Player of the Year nomination in 2020, made his Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 11 (thanks to an invite from Marty Stuart with Earl Scruggs...the video of the event has surpassed 1 million views on YouTube) and has appeared on stage with the likes of Johnny Cash, Peter Frampton and Old Crow Medicine Show. All three of the Compass Records albums released by Ickes and Hensley have received widespread acclaim, including their debut BEFORE THE SUN GOES DOWN, which garnered a GRAMMY® nomination, and the combo's most recent release WORLD FULL OF BLUES, which features collaborations with Vince Gill and Taj Mahal. Ickes and Hensley recently teamed with guitar master Tommy Emmanuel for a very special EP, TOMMY EMMANUEL - ACCOMPLICE SERIES VOL. I WITH ROB ICKES AND TREY HENSLEY. The EP was released May 7, 2021 to critical acclaim. The three high-powered guitar virtuosos performed together on the Grand Ole Opry on May 8, 2021 and from famed Nashville venue 3rd & Lindsley on May 9, 2021 via worldwide broadcasts to celebrate the release of the project. Ickes and Hensley are busy at work on their fourth duo record for Compass Records with GRAMMY®-winning producer Brent Maher.
