Tom Teasley Presents The Art of the Duo
A Curated Summer Concert Series at The Athenaeum in Alexandria
All Concerts 7:00 PM
Alexandria, VA – This summer, internationally acclaimed percussionist and composer Tom Teasley curates The Art of the Duo, a powerful three-part concert series at The Athenaeum in Old Town Alexandria. Known for his genre-blurring style and global approach to rhythm, Teasley brings together a world-class roster of musical partners for a series of intimate and adventurous duo performances. Each concert highlights the chemistry, improvisation, and cultural dialogue that arise when two virtuoso artists share the stage.
Concert Schedule
July 10 – Tom Teasley with Trumpeter Dave Ballou
The series opens with a bold and exploratory performance featuring Dave Ballou, celebrated jazz trumpeter and co-creator of the critically acclaimed album Lunch Break with Teasley. Praised as “a mesmerizing conversation between rhythm and tone” (All About Jazz) and “a masterclass in intuitive improvisation” (Jazz Weekly), Lunch Break showcases the deep creative rapport between these two genre-defying artists. This live appearance brings the album’s spirit of spontaneous dialogue to life in a unique, immersive setting.
July 31 – Tom Teasley with Hammered Dulcimer Virtuoso Chao Tian
Teasley continues the series with Chao Tian, master of the Chinese hammered dulcimer (yangqin), in their innovative duo project Dong Xi (East/West). Fusing traditional Chinese melodies with global percussion and live improvisation, Dong Xi has been called “a cross-cultural sonic adventure” (DC Music Review). Their performances are known for telepathic interplay, theatrical nuance, and fearless creativity — an experience where East meets West in a deeply personal musical conversation.
August 21 – Tom Teasley with Indian Bansuri Master John Wubbenhorst
The final concert in The Art of the Duo features John Wubbenhorst, internationally respected for his masterful playing of the Indian bamboo flute (bansuri). Renowned for bridging Indian classical music with jazz and contemporary world styles, Wubbenhorst has been described as “a flutist of profound depth and breathtaking subtlety” (India Abroad). Joined by Teasley’s global percussion, the duo offers a transcendent exploration of raga, rhythm, and improvisational interplay — a powerful conclusion to the series.
