About this concert
Luctor Ponse's revived monumental works with electronics from the 60s and 70s
Stichting Werk Luctor Ponse asked the KlankKleurFestival to revive the monumental work Musique Concertante from 1977. It was last performed in 1979 at the Nederlandse Muziekdagen in Vredenburg Utrecht. It uses electronics from the 1970s, such as the synthesizer ARP 2600. The piece begins with an improvisation, and a recording of it on tape recorder plays a role again later, but distorted, like a shadow.
In addition to Musique Concertante, NACHT op. 31 (1961) for piano and univox “op de drempel van de nacht” and Enchantement (1972).
Luctor Ponse (1914-1998) was a virtuoso concert pianist from France and Switzerland, with a Dutch father. In 1936, he settled in the Netherlands. In addition to his solo career as a concert pianist, he worked with the ballet of the Dutch Opera and took composition lessons with Henk Badings. Performances and radio engagements initially follow during the war years, but after his refusal to sign for the Reichskulturkammer, this ceases. During this period he composed a lot of chamber music.
After the war, in 1946, he performs Bartók's 2nd piano concerto three times with the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest conducted by Eduard van Beinum, thus introducing Dutch audiences to Bartók for the first time. In addition to his performances as a solo pianist with major orchestras, in these postwar years he tours the world as a duo with violinist Theo Olof, wins a composition prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels and works as a composer-pianist on projects in collaboration with the Scapino Ballet.
In 1960 he receives a 5-year stipend from the Dutch government to devote himself to composition. At this time he discovers the possibilities of electronic music: a rich palette of new timbres reveals itself. Thus he quickly developed further in electronic music, as a composer but also from 1965 as a scientific collaborator and teacher at the Instituut voor Sonologie of the University of Utrecht, with Claude Vivier as a student, among others. He already taught main subject piano at the conservatories of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Groningen; at the Groningen conservatory he also founded a studio for electronic music. Luctor Ponse continued to compose until his death.
After the concert, the musicians will talk about the extensive research that preceded the performance of these works. Afterwards, the first copy of ‘Music is emotional communication’ will be presented. Then, we’ll all raise a glass to Luctor at our cosy Bohémien Borrel. An exhibition on the composer will be on show during the event.
Image makers

This contains, besides the programme with photographs by Co Broerse, an impressive interview by Gerben Makkes van der Deijl with the composer when he was still alive: ‘Muziek is gevoelscommunicatie’ with special permission from Christo Lelie, editor-in-chief of Piano Bulletin.

KlankKleurFestival 2025
The KlankKleurFestival 2025 presents a sparkling mix of visual art and chamber music. Through interaction between sound makers and image makers new adventurous combinations are created. During three days you can see, hear and experience the results of this mix in the Uilenburgersjoel in Amsterdam. The theme of edition 2025 (June 6-8) is Light and Shadow.
The festival consists of an exhibition and various performances, some of which are free of charge.
Participating visual artists have each made a shadow lamp and a light lamp. These take center stage and connect the beginning and end of the festival. The hall will be transformed twice: Friday evening into a Berlin café with the shadow lamps and Sunday evening into a New York dance hall with the light lamps.
Find the full program on the KlankKleurFestival website.
A passe-partout gives access to all concerts of the festival.
