Ruth Wyand Music Biography
Being diversified is Ruth Wyand’s specialty. Her greatest passion in life is her love of performing and composing all styles of American music.
Demonstrating guitar virtuosity with powerful fingerpicking, bottleneck slide and a warm alto voice Ruth plays a mix of Americana, jazz, blues and folk, with a portion of Piedmont picking and bluegrass clawhammer thrown in. Her songwriting is universal, using a melting pot of styles with lyrics that are timeless, relatable, sometimes witty, sometimes serious but always human and genuine.
Ruth presents a mixture of originals with poignant lyrics as well as well-crafted instrumental arrangements of classics ranging from Doc Watson, Etta Baker, Jimi Hendrix, Leo Kottke to Thelonious Monk and Nina Simone.
Each song, no matter how different, has a firm Ruth Wyand stamp of style on it.
Ruth is also a great storyteller - as she puts it "after 100 years of playing everywhere from biker bars, nudist colonies to haunted theaters in New Zealand, there’s not much I haven't seen”. And she'll tell you all about her sometimes hilarious, sometimes scary tales of life on the road. Ruth always presents a soulful and engaging show.
QUOTES:
“Her music reflects the true soul and origins of American Roots Music. With a rootsy approach to songwriting, her songs encompass a broad range of Americana, blues, and jazz steeped in imagery and reality. The kind of artist you’d love to sit in the living room and swap a few stories with”. Lisa Brickhouse WVOD - Public Radio
Her picking style, bottleneck slide and powerful vocals are a treat you won’t want to miss”. Grady Ormsby - South East Regional Folk Alliance, Down East Folk Club
"A dynamic fingerstyle and slide guitarist with a songwriting style where John Hiatt meets Memphis Minnie”. Jesse Finkelstein - International Blues Radio
“Her picking is absolutely astonishing. She possesses a voice that is sassy but smooth with clear diction. She’s also a fantastic songwriter and lyricist”
