The Great Gray Funk Biography
The Great Gray Funk’s name represents the feeling of a long, cold, and foggy winter, perfectly reflecting the band’s atmosphere. The unsettling, dark moods created by the band’s soundscapes are captured in the name itself. Their music blends progressive rock with psychedelic sounds and heavy metal riffs as the central pillars of their style. Doom-laden guitars and aggressive drum grooves effortlessly coexist with catchy choruses and sophisticated instrumentation. The band’s self-coined genre, Dark Rock, seeks to capture the consistently gloomy tone and the diverse influences within the band’s sound.
The five members got together in the late fall of 2020. Over the subsequent two years, they played numerous live shows and signed with Stonefree Records. In May 2023, the release of their self-titled debut album was celebrated with a release concert at Arena Wien. Many concerts followed within Austria and its neighbouring countries, a highlight being a set at the Blackdoor Heavy Music Festival in Passau.
