About this concert
Experience an extraordinary fusion of contemporary jazz and traditional African rhythms as Brisbane’s acclaimed trio Trichotomy return for this year’s festival. Renowned for their inventive blend of modern jazz, ambient music and avant-garde rock, Trichotomy have carved a distinctive niche in Australia’s music scene.
In this special performance, the trio delve into their extensive back catalogue, showcasing music from their 25-year career. Adding a unique dimension to the concert, they collaborate with Senegalese-born Wolof griot and Brisbane-based musician Ziggi Mabeye Diagne. A master of the kora – a 21-string West African harp – Ziggi brings a rich heritage of traditional music, learned from his father and honed since his professional debut at 14 with the Ngewel Diagne Group. His global experience includes performing with renowned artist Baaba Maal’s Daande Lenol Orchestre, where his friendship with kora player Kaouding Cissoko inspired him to master the instrument, placing it at the heart of his musical expression.
This collaboration promises an evening of innovative improvisations and delicate atmospherics, blending Trichotomy’s contemporary sound with the soulful melodies of the kora.
(Sean Foran, piano; John Parker, drums; Samuel Vincent, bass; and special guest Ziggi Mabeye Diagne, kora)

Trichotomy Biography
Australian piano trio Trichotomy really need no introduction. Over the course of three compelling albums for Naim Jazz - Variations (2010), The Gentle War (2011), and Fact Finding Mission (2013), 2017’s KNOWN/UNKNOWN (Challenge) and collaborative releases with String Quartet – “Live With String Quartet (2018), and folk-jazz-blues troubadour Danny Widdicombe – “Between the Lines” (2019) they have carved out a reputation as one of the most exciting trios in contemporary jazz. Inspired by a diverse range of influences from Portico Quartet, Pat Metheny and John Zorn to Tord Gustavsen and Nils Petter Molvear, Trichotomy’s music combines a dense rhythmic focus with a refined melodic clarity. In 2021 they collaborated with percussionist Nozomi Omote for a suite of new work featuring vibraphone and marimba, released as multi-media packages.
Their new album ‘TO VANISH’ is released in 2023, and they tour the UK-Europe.

Selected performance history:
Jazzahead Festival Showcase Germany, Tokyo, Takatsuki, and Kutchan Jazz Festivals Japan, Melbourne Jazz Festival, tours around the UK, MIDEM France & tours to Japan, Canada, China, & South America.
