“The Last One” is a musical culmination of Taylor’s 18 years as a travelling troubadour and a
lifetime of wandering roots. It draws on folk, blues, Motown, pop, reggae, rock, finger style guitar,
Celtic traditions and the wild running rivers of life. At times it’s sparse and naked, at other times its
full, driving and infectiously grooving. At all times it’s focused on the intensity and intimacy of life
in the now. It kicks off with the hopeful, Motown inspired “Good Morning,” in response to the
closing track “Goodnight” , from his previous album “Balance” (2017). “It’s been a long one, got so
dark I couldn’t see, how I could wait that long to see you again, started pondering on some awful
things. Good morning, thank you for this day!” It’s an album about coming through a long dark
tunnel, with the resiliency to do it again. It’s also a fun exploration of truth, perspectives, love and
life. “When I tell you that I love you, you can know at least this much is true,” muses track 2, “This
Much is True.” All songs are written and arranged by Shawn Taylor, except for a cover of Randy
Newman’s “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” , which he arranged.
Taylor self-recorded this album at his Roots Cellar Studio. He performs acoustic and electric
guitar, harmonica, vocals, ukulele and drums. Long-time collaborator Chris D’Amato is on
acoustic and electric guitar and Lee-Ann Lovelace performs a vocal duet. Drummer Adam
Goodhue (Maria Muldaur) contributed remotely from Atlanta, and bassist Craig Akin remotely
from Jersey City and Nashville. Multi-instrumentalist Paul Opalach, added bass and electric
guitar from his Long Hill Recording studio in Shelton, CT, where he also mixed and mastered.
Taylor designed the cover and CD art, around a sunrise photo he took on Mount Liberty in New
Hampshire, in July 2024. He poured everything he had into this album, because we never know
when the last one will be.
